Who has cut a coil off of their H&R Race's?

Apparently some people cut a coil off of the top of their front H&R Race springs, to help bring the height down a little. The word is that the top coil is a dead coil, and does not contribute to the stiffness or spring rate of that spring.

I have only asked two people about this, but wondering how many people out there have done this?

    Any reason not to?

    Thinking about doing it myself.

I did it on my IE3 springs about 3 years ago. No issues whatsoever. Many autocross and track days. It achieved the desired effect of dropping the front a bit more. No reason not to.

Is it confirmed that it's the upper coils and not the ones on the bottom?

I have Koni's, will they get damaged from running the H&R Race's so short?

Turner used to do this with their old school J Stocks so people started doing it with H&R Races which are the same type of springs. The top coils are designed to bind under the weight of the car which means they are inactive. They do nothing except keep the spring oriented correctly in the perch. The springs are low enough, so cutting a 1/2 -1 full coil usually does it for most people. I personally just removed the front spring pads and I was happy with that. Beyond that, there are several drop hats you could buy as well. Some may argue it's not right to cut them at all and it does increase the rate. I say 1/2 to 1 full coil is about all I would do to make sure it's an inactive coil.

Same, just with fewer autox, and no track days. No adverse affects to report.

I did this back in '09 on my old E30, and I tested the spring before and after in a spring rate tester and it definitely increased the rate. It's total BS that any of the spring has a 'dead' coil. If I were to have a choice of doing it again, I wouldn't.

How much did it increase spring rate? I want to increase rate, and go a bit lower. This sounds like a much cheaper option than buying J Stocks.

I remember writing it down when I did it, unfortunately I somehow lost the note because I had to search for it a few weeks ago when the new owner of my car emailed me the same question. I do remember it was somewhere around 100lbs more, maybe even a tad more. It was measured at 1" compression.

Still fail to see the downside to this? 100lbs more rate and a nice drop for zero cost. Someone convince me not to do this.
