Lots of NVH with GC coils

As title says, I have excessive NVH with my GC coils, like a clunking. And I know its directly strut related, I have no play or bad bushings anywhere in the front suspension. I have Cosmo camber plates. I feel like the noise is the threaded piece of the coilover hitting the D-ring and then the bilstein lock collar, are these supposed to just be "floating" as my threaded piece is? It happens going over bumps obviously.

Did you just slip your sleeve over the strut housing and call it good when installing your stuff?

      Yes.

I guess I am now expecting a variety of insults, starting with "idiot" being the least harsh and "dumbass" being the harshest.

Cosmo camber plates usually cause coil bind because of the lack of a good bearing to let it swivel. So does it sound like a popping when your turning?

FIRE UP THE OVER, WE COOKIN' NOOBLETS TONIGHT.

Kidding. A lot of people do that.
Take the sleeve off, wrap the strut housing with electrical tape where the sleeve should be, then press the sleeve back on and over the tape. The fit will be snug and no more moving parts.

Absolutely, but it's inaudible unless you have the car off and are turning the wheel. No complaints here at all with the Cosmo plates, been running them for 10,000 miles.

Ah well said! Thank you! Hopefully this kills the clunking, girlfriend hates it and thinks the wheel's about to fall off..

Haha. Mine gets goosebumps whenever the car creeks or something.
              Hopefully that was the problem.

There are ways of stopping the coil bind as well

My strut retaining nut unscrewed once causing a clunking noise like you described.

Do tell. I'm taking my strut apart so I don't see why not make everything perfect.

Needle brearings. Should cost about $20 for the pair.

+1 on this. Good upgrade to cheaper camber plates. A lot of people do this with the basic E39 m5 coilover offerings from BC and others. Upgrade the bearing.
