I searched thru a VERY long email chain so may have given you the number for the dust boots.

Either way it sounds like Wes has you covered.
Seat Shocks....I have passed the baton to John Christy from Ninestitch. Email John or Garrett at ninestitch1@gmail.com

        Same problem

I installed Bilstein HDs myself a few months ago and have been plagued with the same knocking/clunking, but only on the right side. I'm about to overhaul that strut to see what's up.

Am I correct that your problem is having installed 45mm diameter shock inserts in a 51mm housing, and that the solution is getting a new gland nut of different dimensions from Wes at Bilstein?

I wonder whether anyone has any further thoughts about what might cause this clunking.

Yep its the different diameters that are causing the clunking for me. I checked my other e30 which is a later model and it has smaller strut housings than my 85 e30.

I probably gave you his direct line rather than the switchboard. Note that both he and his NC counter part, Brian McCroskey, sometimes have their phones forwarded to each other so it probably doesnt matter what number you call. Bottom line is these guys have it covered.
