Yes dirty325ix. It's most likely you're strut mount. You can look at the mount under the hood and turn the wheel at the same time. When I did this i saw small cracking on top. When I removed it, I saw no real visible sign of damage, but I had the clunk. New mount everything is fine.

Wait, so how many washers are in this assembly? I *just* re-installed my strut, and I know I used all the washers that were there before, but with a car that has 300K miles on it one never knows what should be there vs what is ;)
I had two washers. On directly above the mount, and one directly below the mount, right between the mount and the plate. There was nothing between the plate and the shock. Is two washers the correct number?-------------------------------------------------

Look at the R3V link in my Sig. Lot's of good info there...and an exploded view of the top mount.Comment

Thanks. That reminds me that I looked up that diagram and have everything listed there. But what the diagram doesn't show is the top end of the shock as the last piece, so I'm unsure if billies have a washer there or if it's just supposed to be the "hat" (#9).-------------------------------------------------

The dotted line represents the damper.
The parts are oriented exactly as you see in the exploded image on the damper.Comment

EXACT same thing is happening to mine.
I replaced lowering springs (Vogtland) with OEM stock springs because I did not like the ride with lowering springs.
After the install, I got the clunking noise. I can, just like the OP, jump on the front fender and replicate the noise. It seems I can only replicate it on the passengerside. And so now thinking back, I do remember putting all the washers back in place for the driverside but do not have memory of putting back the washers for the passengerside...
Any more updates from the OP regarding this matter? Was it the washers?Comment

Like I posted, this happened to me after some time and it was the shock lock nut that had loosen, which holds the shock in the housing that was loose and the shock was loose in the shock tower.Alex 88 m5 | 91 318is | 19 Subaru Ascent

I found the problem. The strut was not screwed all the way into the strut housing. Tightened it up with an oil filter wrench and no more noise!Comment
