    PSA: Delete your power steering!

So I read lots of mixed reviews with regards to removing the power steering on the E30 before I pull the trigger myself, but now that I have I want to set the record straight:
There is no downside, these cars should never have even power steering to begin with, and the best thing you can do for yourself and your car is to throw that nasty, grimy pump, hoses, and reservoir straight in the trash can!
Ok, perhaps I should qualify that statement a bit; I'm assuming that if you're on these forums, then you are an enthusiast driver and generally like to work on your car. If you drive a 325iX automatic and still take it to the dealer for everything, then perhaps this doesn't apply.
In any case, I removed the PS from my 325iS - properly with removing all the PS fluid and putting on a aluminum block with the banjo bolts to plug the rack holes - while doing some other front end work. After I got the car back together and drove it a bit, I actually FORGOT that I had removed the power steering! The steering is so easy, precise, and pleasant, there's just no need to encumber it with extra boost.
Granted I also have a 2002 so am accustomed to heavier, non-assisted steering when stationary, but let me be clear: the unassisted E30 steering with my teeny-tiny 320mm steering wheel and 205 tires is STILL lighter than the 2002 with a 380mm wheel and 195 tires!!!
Yes it takes a little bit of effort to turn the wheel when the car is parked, but let me remind you: this is bad for your tires, your garage floor, and you should try not to do it! All you need is to be moving just the tiniest bit, even 1/4 MPH, and then it's a non-issue. Above 2 MPH and everything is just effortless.
And most importantly, you get the oily, grimy, foul crap out of the way in the engine bay, which IMHO would still make it worth it even if there were drawback, but there aren't, so it becomes a no-brainer.
If you're worried, try it and just keep you parts (I guarantee one of them is leaking anyway, in which case you pretty much have nothing to loose) in the extremely unlikely event that you want to put it back on, but at least try it! You'll be a happier E30 owner, I promise!

Agreed. I have a Z4 rack, and even with 205 semi-slicks it's not bad in parking lots. I honestly love how it drives. +1 for not feeling like I'm driving a bus.

Seems a shame to me, BMW uses some of the best feeling power steering racks and systems in the auto industry.

It's not a grimy system if you maintain it.

This just seems like a post about how a poorly maintained power steering system is worse than no power steering, which is probably true.

Don't know about OP but every car that I have driven without power steering has been horrible to drive. There is so much effort needed to turn the steering wheel that the driving becomes unpleasant. Same with e30. It's ok driving straight but everything else is much worse than driving with power steering. Steering feel is not same thing as how assisted the steering is. You can have good feel of the road even with normal power steering.

If this is the case then I suspect the removal was done incorrectly. You can't just drive with the belt of, yeah that would be truly horrid. The fluid needs to be drained from the rack, so that you're not wasting effort on pushing all the fluid around and through the hoses and pump and such. But with all that removed, the only thing you need to overcome is the forces on the tire acting through the caster angle. When you're moving, this is quite small. If you try it (done properly), I think you'll be surprised.
And I don't disagree that steering feel even with the factory PS was quite good, albeit still damped and slightly over boosted, though no where near like my Subaru! My main point though is that it's not necessary, and with an old, tired system I feel there's more to be gained by simply removing it rather than refreshing it. But hey, to each his own!

MOT removal. I mean cars that came from factory without power steering. Including some e30 models. Putting powersteering to e30 which came without it becomes much more modern feeling car.

Each to their own. I love my power steering. Allows me to drive with one hand holding a coffee in the other hand.

My '92's PS belt broke. I drove it for 6 miles to a parts store and put it on in 110 Az heat in the parking lot.

I'm a lazy hates heat old guy. That I did that should show how bad it was.

Yes, with just the belt removed, things are awful. This is no way to drive a car. It is also 100% different to disconnecting the lines and removing all the fluid from the rack.

This is also no problem for me, except while trying to shift with no cup holders, but that's a separate issue ;)

Well do what you must do. but I reckon the e30 power steering is one of the best feeling power steering systems ive driven. Just enough assist to make life nice but still enough steering feel to aid in confidence.

for years i had no power steering in an old corolla (ke70, full of ae86 drivetrain) and it was quite excellent without it for hard driving. I still like the e30 power steering for best of both worlds of hard driving and comfortable daily driving.
