    Koni adjustable shock question

For those who have Koni adjustables, how do the rears adjust? I'm looking at the upper shock mount and it doesn't look like you'll be able to adjust it on the top like with the struts. Do they have an adjuster on the side of the shock?

Tirerack says "remove rubber to adjust" or something. I'd like adjustable dampers for autocross use but it's not worth it ifI have to uninstall them just to adjust them each time.

    Any knowledge?

You have to remove the shock, remove the bumpstops, then compress the shock and twist it.

        That blows.
So much for dialing it in at the autocross.

I believe those top adjustable rear shocks are special ordered or shocks from another model??? I know Ground Control offers them.

Yes, they are Ford Mustang GT rear shocks. CG, TC Kline, and others sell them.

Thenew Konis adjust the same way that the fronts do.

And are awesome, so easy to adjust takes about 10 seconds. Id recommend them to any one.

Also PM Slyder (Jason) from C3Motorsport, they may be able to get them to you faster, and he is just an aweome guy and would probably do a GB.

That not that bad, drive the side you want to adjust on piece of 2*4(or higher if your car is very low), take off the bottom mount of shock, extract the shock, take of the plastic ring from the shock piston, fulluy compress the shock and adjust it by rotating it.

Then just put the lower bolt back. Some times a floor jack is required to get the lower bolt back on.

                    Takes like 2 minutes/side.

The Koni SA's from GC are top adjustable. To be able to adjust the rears, you need to cut a small hole in the trunk lining so you can get the adjuster in to the top of the damper. Very neat.

Koni does not sell top adjustables from the factory. The general consensus of how to get top adjustable rears for E30's is by using shocks from a ford mustang

The most popular part # seems to be: 8041 1186SPORT (Mustang 94-04, All Models-Exc. IRS rear susp.)

A variation I heard of was with a double adjustable shock part number: 8042 1026 Sport (Mustang, 8 cyl. 87-93 — Double Adjustable Rear Alternative)

                            And in double adjustable.

—Double Adjustable Sport Alternative 8042-1134 Sport (Fits Mustang 94-04 Exc. IRS rear suspension. External Rebound & Compression Adjustment)

Up front I have heard of people using shorter shocks from VW'S to work with lowering springs other than the shock Koni manufactured for the E30: 8641 1021SPORT (325iS 84-91)

                            People have used these shocks

shocks for VW Corrado G60 VR6's. (unsure of part number)

Front 8041-1198sport (not sure what car these are from?)

                            And double Adjustable

Fronts 8611-1258Race (Strut Insert Front, Koni Race Double Adjustable Fits Golf II, Jetta II 1985-90 (Models w/non-sealed struts). Rebound and Compression Adjustable.)

Fronts 8610 1447 Race (I believe there double adjustable, not sure what car these are from?)

Any thing that would help shed some light on what are the most popular P/N’s???? used for various applications would help greatly.

Does any one know if you buy these shocks off the shelf if they'll need to be modified/revalved for street use? I've heard some say yes and more say no.

Is firming up the shocks similar to re-valving them?

Do rear shocks need to be re-valved to work with the front set?

Slyder from C3 has a group buy going on for coil overs right now, he may be also selling just Koni top adjusts. His price is the best I've seen.
