I am bumping this, because I am about to order a ton of Konis, and this crap is throwing me for a loop.

          1. So M42 and M20 strut housings are different??
          2. Which shocks will I need for a 1990 318i? the 8641 1021 and 80 2522 combo, or the 8641 1210 and 80 2641 combo??

I talked w/ a rep at Koni who was genuinely confounded and did not have an answer for me when I asked why there are different part numbers for different E30s, but gave me length and stiffness specs for the shocks.

          8641 1021 / 80 2522:
          485/614 mm compressed/expanded length
          500/750 N compression/rebound stiffness

          8641 1210 / 80 2641:
          488/585 mm
          700/750 N

Some early models have 45mm strut housings

Your '90 will have 51mm strut housing.

^^ yes, the part numbers listed above are all for the bigger diameter strut housing, and that wasn't my question.

why did someone state above that 4 cyl and 6 cyl strut housings are different? is one longer than the other? They can't be, they have the same realOEM part number, I checked. So why, then, do some Konis work and some don't, and why are there different shock part numbers for different (seemingly identical) E30s?

I think the 318i with the m10 had the smaller diameter struts the m42 is the larger diameter like the m20

this is really good info. though i'm a little bit confused about the numbers. In either case, are those length and stiffness numbers for the front or rear shock (i.e. 1021 or 2522)?

Bumping this as well for the same reasons. I want to get Konis but if I don't know for sure I'll just get Bilsteins. Did OP end up buying some shocks? Has anyone bought Koni shocks and installed them on an 318IS? (M42)

my brother in law bought the shocks for his '91 318i. It was such a long time ago I can't remember what conclusion we came to.
