Why are they considered rice? They always seemed to be a well built wheel, that looks good on almost any car, and not killer expensive either. I don't prefer them on the e30 myself, but on pretty much any other car. Overplayed maybe, but I never really though rice

              :D
Then probably my wheels are rice too. BBS RZ's that were original equipment on a japanese sports car :).
I've never been one to worship logos though. Somebody shows pics of a german speialist parts, Hartge, Scnitzer etc. everyone shouts "awesome!" -I personally am only interested at its mechanical properties. Does it save weight, does it add downforce, does it increase torque? I think, building a car by neccessity and choosing parts for their properties not brand, ends you up with a more interesting car.

I want a set of ats rally gravels, however they seem to be hard to find and a competition only wheel

I have to agree with petrolhead for the most part.

it is a very ugly, but light wheel. I like the look of apex arc-8s better.

They look great on some cars. I desperately wanted a set for my rx8, but never got around to it (in 7 years of ownership, go figure.) I don't think they look atrocious on e30s, but I don't think they look great either. I don't think I'm alone in this and that's probably why few people, outside of race cars, run them.

I feel like only the concave or wide ones look good. They look goofy in 15x7 and high offsets
