So, I'd suggest going smaller. Or if you really want 225's, the BFG G-Force Sport is known to work and is honestly a pretty similar tire to the R-S2.
I was hoping to go with 225's and I had heard things about the RS-2's and wanted to try them out. So does one tire brands 225 width actually run that much wider than anothers?
The issue is with the strut and not the fender though? I was more worried about the fender than the strut I thought I had a fair bit of room.
Maybe I will go with G-force sports again then.

The issue is definitely the strut. The fender will be close, but the tire will hit the front strut housing before it hits the fender with those wheels.
But elaborating, the G-Force and the R-S2 are really similar. They are both very very good in the dry, mediocre in the wet, and fairly good in all other aspects (ride, noise, etc). The difference is the R-S2 will wear out a lot faster...you start to see why I don't really love them too much (and I actually have them in 225/50/15 on my E30 right now).

this question may be answered but I don't really want to read through 60+ pages. I'm looking at ordering some bfgoodrich super sport 215/45R17 is anyone running something that size?. I currently have 215/40R17 and my car is pretty low. fenders aren't rolled but need to be. The 215/45's are only 1.19 inches taller, so I'm guessing they will fit.

The alternative is the 215/45/16 RT-615, which is a proven tire that will fit a lot easier.
Danny: Same applies to you. The best bang for buck choice for those wheels is the 215/45/16 RT-615, and I frequently recommend this exact wheel/tire combo for street/autox/track setups.
