Glad to hear that solved the problem. Did you get the updated hoses with the added insulation? One of the main failure points is that un-insulated hoses lead to condensation, causing that milkshake blockage nastiness.

Juuuuust did this to the 530. An thats exactly what was wrong with mine.

I miss my wagon thou. :(

I used the old insulator on the main valve itself but every other hose I bought had no insulation. I was taking to one of the mechanics where I work and he does the same, no insulation on hoses but insulation on the main valve and he's never had any issues. Neither have I :).

          That's reassuring.

BMW recognized the problem fairly early and issued updated p/n's for all the hoses and even the dipstick tube itself. Hoses got foam insulation and the dipstick tube became double-walled. Strangly, even after 150k miles, my e46 (m54b30) had no buildup or milkshake at all. Everything looked great. I only replaced it because I was going through a quart of oil every 1200 miles (and I still am...)

Same. The only real clogged thing was the valve itself and the small hose that runs to the intake spreader.

Updates! The front wheel bearings were driving me insane. I have Sachs struts so this is going to be a REAL challenge. Anyway, lets go!

                  Tight fit...

Had to make a custom socket for the bottom bolt.

Here's what it looks like. Kinda worked in the beginning and...

It didn't work. Opted instead for a custom grinded custom fabbed custom custom 18mm offset wrench to fit for the bottom bolt.

                  New vs. Old

                  It in.

Best tool I've ever bought from Harbor Freight.

Back together, one side done in about 2 hours.

                  Time for the other side...

You can see that oil slick. I gotta find the leak, thats BAD

Mans best friend aside from duct tape and super glue.

It in (only 1 hour to put this one in).

                  Gotta clean these wheels

Otherwise, the wheel bearings are done!
Decided to also fix the carpet inside

                  Kinda ripped

                  Best stuff for this.

                  Done!

                    i love threads like this.

now i'm going to check my craigslist for e39 tourings lol

Go for it! One of the comfiest cars I've ever been in. Look for a stick one, it just adds to the driving pleasure.

My next job is subframe mounts, I'm just working out a time with a mechanic friend I have that can help me do them. I'm seriously considering doing this...

Nice progress! I've been helping my friend with his e46, and its funny, we've done almost every single thing you've done to your car so far. He, also like you (though it looks like, and I hope its fixed), has a check engine light that comes back a couple days later, sometimes months later, after clearing the code. If someone wanted a list of common problems, they might as well read here lol.

                              Keep up the good work!
