For E30...83-85 models had the 3 red LED's, early SI board without any chip just black plastic coded peg that goes into the back of the tach. 86-on models started using 1 red LED, different SI boards with coded chip. I'm tempted to call it 2/1986. That's the cut off for the older one, as per RealOEM. My 11/84 (1985) 535i has the 3 red LED one.
I have an '86 cluster, but never noticed which it had. Will report back.
