It seems like pretty much all of you get Conforti chips. Why is this the most popular as opposed to Dinan or Bav Auto? Is it just because of the price? It seems like the programmable chip from Bav-Auto is a good idea because it can be optimized to work with other modifications to your car. Is there really any advantage to this?
Why Conforti?

IMO most people went with JC cause word of mouth advertisement. alot of people dont even know that Active Autowerkes makes chips for the E30 for about the same prices. and similar gains. put it this way.. If alot of people have it, then its good. If not alot of people have it, Its not as good. similar case with wheels.
BTW, I have an Active Autowerkes chip. I got it on a Group Buy over a year ago. werkes great. they do sell them used on their site for like 90 bucks. their just not always available. goodluckFOKAI DA'MA'SHI'I ENSANE GRAPPING INT. -
Most people go with JC cuz he's a fucking legend!
JC is famous for his great chip software and is very proud of his work.

The first question you should be asking: Is there anybody more brilliant
and more connected with the electronics & mechanical inner workings of
bosch/BMW engine management systems than Jim Conforti. I have to admit I
am a friend of Jim's and am somewhat subjective (and in awe!) when it comes
to my interpretation of his abilities as a chip design genius.Comment

I thought that almost all E30 chips were ~$250 new...?
The most common argument for JC chips being the best is that while almost all the available chips quote +15hp and +15ft/lbs in peak gains, that the JC chip has the smoothest gains. Apparently JC chips just make a really smooth powerband, while some other chips just go for top end power gains.
I've also heard (on E3S) that Dinan chips are crap for some E30 engines, and that they've caused a number premature engine "deaths."Comment

Most all chips run about the same price, that is true. Cheap chips = shoddy made. (Used chips are cool, JC are good finds ~100-150)Originally posted by JarvisI thought that almost all E30 chips were ~$250 new...?

JC is known for great curves and smoothness.
Dinan is horrible for S14 (M3 engines) Rob M3 i believe was talking about they just kill them on E3S. My engine is dead......I used Dinan, i'm not sure if the Revlimiter was working or not .
I'd trust JC!Comment

i did alot of research before i got mine & it was a toss up between the bav & JC... i currently have a bav auto chip & got it cuz no one told me the JC chip was cheaper (for the eta  ) & i happened to go to the bav auto show & shine a little while after i decided to buy one
i'm very pleased w/ my chip & have gotten a little over a year of use out of it w/ absolutly no regrets.... too bad it may become unnecessary if i ever get around to making my 2.7i... just have to switch it up for a 325i chip ;)-Pete

No, here's the real deal:
Most of the chips out there are designed to be WOT chips. This means that until wide open throttle conditions are met, the chip is not really presenting any gains. This is good and bad. Good for fuel consumption, bad for all around performance. While it doesn't feel like v-tec kicking in at 5000rpms, there is a noticeable difference.
The Jim C chip affects the entire rpm range, thus, fuel economy is slightly down (if you're that concerned, you don't buy a chip), but the performance is available sooner.
Jim Conforti has had alot of experience and exposure for legitimate reasons.
Dinan is certainly a respectable tuner as well as AA, but they don't have nearly as much exposure, and there is good reasons for that.
I have an eta, and i didn't notice much more performance from the DINAN to the JC chip. It is noticebale in higher gears at hghway speeds, where the torque comes into play. day to day driving won't garner any noticeable diff between the two.
Thats the bottom line.Nick

no, that's not what he's talkin about... bav auto has a chip... same as the other chips, but for another 100 bucks they'll update it whever you do another modification to your carOriginally posted by MattM20if your talking about the shark injector or similar flash reprogrammers then they are no good for our cars, only good for obd-II I-6'sOriginally posted by Purdue89E30so what about the upgradeable chip? is it a good idea or not really worth it?
i'm not sure how in depth bav auto gets when doing this update... but i doubt they put the car on a dyno... but who knows, they might
the upgradable chip is probably only worth it if you're gonna do alot of other mods... different TB, Intake manifold, exhaust, cam, etc etc etc-Pete
