So I just got my E 30 out of storage after three years was driving home and the right rear tire started binding up got hot had a little flame got it put out pump the brakes hard a couple of times set the emergency break hard a couple of times drove home for a while and no issues Wheel bearing seems fine but I’m wobbling in about 40 miles an hour pretty bad thinking maybe the wheels out of balance jacked up the car no appreciable play up or down or right and left but then I had gas leaking out from the gas tank right above the tire thank God it was leaking while I was driving it would be a burn up mess I pulled the rear seat check the connections at the top of the tank and everything looks fine but I get a steady drop of gas and brand new gas tank I did just filled up on the way home total loss I fear I might have to pull the gas tank Any ideas ?

It could be the filler hose or the pressurized lines at the top. Both hoses are accessible without dropping the tank. You just have to find where the leak is coming from. If you smell fuel inside the car, it's probably the pressurize hoses under the rear seat on top of the tank or a loose clamp. If you smell it outside, it's likely the filler hose in front of the rear passenger tire."I'd probably take the E30 M3 in this case just because I love that little car, and how tanky that inline 6 is." - thecj

There's a metal y pipe up in there close to the filler that likes to rust away, and then if the tank's pretty full it will leak.
It's worth pulling the right rear wheel and then the plastic cover and taking a look at that whole mess-
there's way too much going on in there for the way they did it.
If that's all dry, pull the rear seat and the access cover and see what you can see.

it's technically archaeology at this pointnow, sometimes I just mess with people. It's more entertaining that way. george graves
