Buy it, that's a good deal. They fit in the engine bay with no modifications, make a bit more power and way more torque than an m50 and only weigh 15lb's more. The m30 is an underrated swap.
what do u think?

If you are going to do a swap why not upgrade alittle? Its like taking a 305 small block over a 350.
Is that better?Comment

$How much what?
Dollars, Kilos or inches too big for an e30 engine bay?
See here for specs:

For significantly less money you can get a motor that puts out significantly more area under the curve and sounds a lot better, at the expense of a few more lbs over the front axle. Clearly there is more to the cost of an engine swap than the engine itself, but saving $400 and putting out more grunt can't be a bad thing.
Obviously I have not tried either swap, but I don't see the appeal of the M50 over the M30, besides that it's newer and it might fit into the engine bay easier.
Edit: M50s aren't quite as expensive as I thought they were, but a b35 for $350 is a pretty good deal.paint sucksComment

You said swapping in an M30 instead of an M50 is like taking a 305 instead of a 350.
When the M30 weighs basically the same
Is cheaper
Has significantly more power
Has way more torque and low-end
I don't get your comparison.paint sucksComment

M30 maybe cheaper aka 305 and the m50 a 350. A m50 is just a better built motor but I do agree with you on those points that it does make more power/torque.
M30
Weights more
Not as reliable
Fitment
It was a comparison to reliability for the most part.Comment

From what I have heard the M30 will run forever and even withstands retarded boost if you should choose to go through the trouble to turbo it
The M50 I haven't looked into as much
I am just going off what I have read (consensus) here but the M30 is barely heavier than the M50, and I haven't heard of any fitment issues... what's the deal, do you have to relocate some stuff to get it to fit or hack up the frame?
I still don't get how the M30 is the 305 and the M50 is the 350... maybe I'm just partial to SOHC motors.paint sucksComment

You cant beat the reliability of an m50. You can do a swap for a m50 for or less then the cost of a m30. For the fitment some people on here have had to (massage) the bulkhead so the head isn't resting on it. I just think if you are going through all the trouble of swapping a motor why not get a DOHC motor. From what I have heard the M30 will run forever and even withstands retarded boost if you should choose to go through the trouble to turbo it

Call me a ricer but all DOHC swap exhausts I've heard have had rasp out the ass.You cant beat the reliability of an m50. You can do a swap for a m50 for or less then the cost of a m30. S50/52 intake sound is fucking secks though.paint sucksComment

The analogy makes no sense, give it up.
15lbs
wat
no modifications necessary
m50 has cooling system problems, m30 has rockers so we're even.
Really, they are both good engines to swap into an e30. Both cost about the same and will be about the same speed-wise.
But this has been discussed before.Byron

the m30 is fucking bullet proof, I'm not saying that m50's aren't but afaik they warp heads alot more than m30's do. That said I still dream of an s52 swap over an m30, I never realized that an m30 only weighs 18lbs more than an s50 though sheeat.
