            According to Strictly Eta...

            84-85 325 and 325e came with a 2.79:1 differential

            86-88 325, 325e, and 325es came with a 2.93:1 differential

            ES came standard with LSD and I believe it was an option in others.

              my stinking 86 es has an open 2.93 (it stinks not only because it's an eta, but because of the moldy trunk. I am ripping all the carpet out this year, I swear.)

                Well, you either have a e dressed as an "es" or someone replaced it at one point and didn't know the difference.

                  I think it got replaced, and the PO went for the cheapest option. It is def. an es, it has all the right stuff other than the diff.

                      e = eta
                      es = super eta, slightly better performing engine & car package.

                      The eta engines, 2.7L M20 (M20B27), were an economy engine designed in the 80's due to the high fuel prices. My personal belief is that other car companies diesel engines did not sell well in the US market so BMW designed the engine primarily for the US market, which offered a normally aspirated petrol engine that got decent gas mileage. The "e" & "es" engines were a lil' more torquey but that's about the only compliment performance wise.

                      I'm anxious to see if BMW markets their diesel engined models in N. America now that the US fuel prices are rising again. The modern diesels are great engines, and most folks cannot tell the difference between the two, except in the MASSIVE torque they produce.

                          es does not mean super eta, only the '88 "e" models had the super eta engine. the "es" is just the sport package eta.
