It looks like there are rust spots behind the valance and check the condition of the radiator support to make sure it's straight. Whatever wrecked the front bumper and valance could have done a lot more damage than you think.

And.....look at the car during the day time. you would be surprised as to what you may not notice at night.

I paid $2400 for my '89i two years ago, same color combo and tranny, but mine was (still is) in better shape.

        Get him to $2000

I paid $3400 for mine, mint, no rust, perfect running, 5 speed eta, 89k miles ($100 over book ~2.5yrs ago). Don't know if that helps or not...

Hey, OP, did you ever sell that VW you were driving?

Sounds like you should offer $1,300.

"I like it, but I need to be ready for European-car repair bills... $1300 is the best I can do."
Then, the magical phrase, as he is hemming and hawing, acting insulted:
                  "I have cash."

Be prepared to walk away. He'll reconsider.. it's not like there is a swarm of enthusiasts in Mason City.

not yet, haha. I did get an offer on it the other day that seems pretty serious though.
