    I want a quiet exhaust

    ... relatively.

My stock exhaust has a leak that I can hear, and I want my car to sound better. I don't really want a loud exhaust. If I did i would just buy the cheap chinese (IE) cat back. I want something that sounds stock, or even a new stock exhaust. So what should I do? My car is completely stock and it will likely stay that way for a while.

I'm hesitant to go for a used exhaust because I"m afraid that it will sound like mine. Mine looks good, so I can't really tell how it will sound by just looking at a used exhaust. I can weld and have access to any type of welder I want. If I were to do my own exhaust, what muffler do you people recommend? We don't have to pass emissions here and don't have inspections so should I even bother with a cat? Will catless with a quiet muffler be loud?

    Thanks for any tips.

a new OE muffler is cheap. the expensive part would be the cat - does your cat section leak? if you remove the cat the car will most definitely be louder, and likely smell like fuel.

I share similar thoughts in regards to my current Magnaflow 14815, it has an alright note when blasting around town, but 90% it sounds monotone and loud.

Please post up a price and maybe a sound clip or two if you opt for a new OE unit, I'd really appreciate it.

Yeah, after thinking about it I don't think I'd leave the cat out. The cat is actually the worst looking part of the entire system, but I actually don't know where it is leaking from. It's up on stands now so I guess I should just give it a good looking over and see if I can get away with just replacing the cat and muffler.

I just looked at factory cats and I can tell you this is definitely not the route I'll go. I refuse to drop $450+ for a cat. I'll keep looking, but I may just have to find a used one in good condition..

For what you are describing i would highly recommend a eberspacher.

Sounds like stock but has a nice rumble to it. There is no droning when driving...very similar to stock. it is not loud at all...you will not be disappointed.

                good luck

Do you install two of them?? Isn't the stock muffler 2 in 2 out?

I'm probably about to pull the cat off of my 318, if you want it.

Not sure what you are asking.

Yes I am referring to the one piece cat back muffler which is 2 in 2 out.

If it is in good shape and not leaking I will take it off your hands. It doesn't matter if the flanges are the same as mine, I can make some and weld them to the exhaust. Thanks.

And thanks for the ideas guys, I'll look in to them right now.

Alright, I'll hit you up some time next week probably. Once I pull it, I'll make sure it's in good shape (I know it doesn't leak, but the heat shield might be coming off. Easy fix.) Car is at the body shop until Friday, It goes to the exhause place monday/tuesday.

i think you should just get a generic cat and order an OE muffler, have a muffler shop fit them in nicely, done.
