fyi, the kinetic coefficient of friction is a less than the static coefficient of friction. So his tires skidding with locked wheels are much less effective at decellerating his car than the tires rolling even if they turn off for a few fractions of a second. So ABS would have allowed for going a slower speed, plus the added benefit of being able to control the car safer with ABS.

But on the wet roadway I probably would have spun out. Better the deer got launched into the woods then me...

Earlier today, before I left work I decided to take a trip down memory lane and take a look through my car's file from the days when I was still a customer. I found slips for nearly $4000 worth of tune-ups, maintenance and suspension mods in one summer alone. Shortly after the slips ended I started working as an employee and have spent the last two years scrounging parts and working into the wee hours to get my car just how I wanted it. As it sat (up until an hour ago) I had a lightly tweaked S50, GC coils, ST sways, solid bushings all around, E36 M3 rack, Recaro Speeds, Massive BBK, SSR Comps. and a bunch of other misc bits that I had acquired. It was a labor of love and I have had my hands on nearly every inch of that car either replacing, upgrading or modifying.

I saw the deer but it was too late. It was in the opposite lane and moving into my path at a steady clip. The rain, a mild case of excessive speed and exhaustion led to panic reaction with all four wheels locked I hit the deer head on at nearly 60mph. It hit above the bumper, destroying the kidney grill and everything from there over to the passenger side. the hood became a ramp and the deer cleared a decent distance before landing in crumpled heap in the woods.

The hood, radiator, radiator support, right fender, headlights (Bosch elips), euro grills and anything else that was unlucky enough to be in the front of the car are toast. It drove home (this happened about a half mile from home) despite the flat spots on the front tires but based on the extent of the damage I'm sure the insurance company will call it a total. There's body rust that makes fixing this shell a lost cause anyway. The obvious solution will be to buy a clean shell and swap the good bits over but I may end up parting the car out and going a different route. That is not a decision for now though, sleep comes first and then a painful call to the insurance company in the morning...

It's been a fun six years and I almost completed a project but I'll be back in some capacity soon...

hard to say without being there but with abs you likely would not have panic locked. which means you would have had traction to steer and or stop earlier and gotten the speed down faster. skidding wheels don't really scrub speed. bottom line is abs helps for 99% of drivers. i doubt your in the 1% because I didn't see you driving pro yet. whichever instructor told you to delete it was wrong. anyways, all a moot point now.

Did you fail math / logic or are you just retarded? 60 > 55, going over the speed limit is illegal... so going 60 in a 55 is illegal.

Sounds like if you couldn't safely react to potential road hazards you were driving recklessly, not appropriate for conditions and roadway.

You deserved it, the deer did not.

Important part is that you're alive and well to rebuild or start anew. Glad you're ok.

Sucks man. Yeah you were kind of asking for it driving briskly while fatigued with an ABS delete in the rain, but that doesn't mean you deserved it. We've all done dumb shit.

And whoever said ABS would have him travelling faster is a tard.

I assume your car had full insurance coverage? If it only had liability, don't even bother reporting it to the insurance. Just part it out.
