ideally, the only reason i would do the trade is to flip the car for a profit. I paid 1500 for the e30 2 years ago and it came with a parts car.

it gets really shitty in the winter time here though, the quattro could come in handy, however i champed every winter so far with my e30

I have respect for audi's, however im a bmw enthusiast at heart so the first thing i would buy after i flipped the car for a profit (if i can even do that in its current condition) would be a nice clean e30 (m50 turbo anyone?) or a nice e34 (i love them too)

I would not do it. I would get another quattro for a dd and keep my e30 but never do a trade. Actually I have been looking for a 90 quattro for a winter car so I could park the IX and save it from the salty roads.

Audi products are just as good as BMW. I woudl only trade if it had the 1.8t which is easily and effectively modded. The 2.8 is not a good performance base to start.

Is this also the vintage that has the 47 control arms per side on the front suspension that fail regurlarly?

Sounds tempting, but those Audi's are the opposite of bulletproof, as opposed to your 318. Yes it will be quicker, but then, what isnt? I say pass up on it.

i don't know if i would buy any turbo car with anything over 150k miles.. i thought the ko3's in the 1.8t blow up at around 100k miles?

anyway, i know the 2.8 platform is the red headed step child in the audi scene, and the only "mod" i would do to this car is clean it up, replace a few things and then sell it. If i can sell this car for more then 1500+ bucks as it sits now i will get all the money i put into my bimmer.

                i really want a clean non DB e30, or a nice e34

a 196K AUdi is not flippable IMO...
Timing belt is an issue with that car as well as other things...
check out the Audi forums for all your answers...
IMO, only enthusiasts would even consider buying a High Mileage Audi and they would want a steal on it....
It's like selling 200K BMW's, unless you have a ton of receipts, getting the $$ out of them is hard...unless you restore them...
but there is Not much of a Market in Restored 98 Audis either...
                  just my 2 cents...

^ Truth, if you do end up swapping the 318i for the A4, then you'll have to really get the A4 up to par to make it "desirable" and to get Audi people in-the-know to bite. I'd say just keep the 318i until a more attractive A4 pops up (fear not, they always do, and there are always some killer deals to be had with B5's specifically.) Like I said before, your friend's A4 is nearing its expiration date and will be no fun to be around when the transmission, something electrical, or any major engine work comes around.

TOB's make noise when they are being used (when the clutch is pressed in). Noise while the clutch is out is something in the tranny... input shaft bearing or something like that.

It's not always a horrible thing though. I haven't heard many getrag 260's without the input shaft rattle. Not sure about b5's though.

I wouldn't do the trade unless I had the time to learn how to work on a different kind of car and I had the cash and time to find the parts I needed. You have to think of this transaction as if you were buying the car for cash and you were budgeting to include the cost of repairs and other incidentals.

Also consider that your insurance premiums will be much less with the E30 and it will survive better in a fender-bender. I've read several testimonies on R3V where members totaled their cars in a wreck but they were still drivable. In most cases a little bit of time and a trip to the scrap yard is all you need to get it back on the road.

I doubt a b5 would be any more expensive to insure then an e30, unless you have comprehensive/collision (why?). If anything, it might lower your premiums, as it has airbags.

Totaling a car and still driving it is irrelevant to anything. Totaling is just a term used by insurance companies when the cost of repair exceeds the value of the car. Obviously, not hard to do on an e30. A body shop can get to a $1500 estimate in no time.
