    2.7i Problems.....

Before I start I don't need peoples rude remarks and stupid comments, just looking for help, if you can't stop reading.

Well it started out when I was driving my car around beating it(like an idiot) and she started making awful noises. So I went on forums started reading about 2.7i swaps. Went and bought everything I needed. I started ripping into the 2.7 and found that the cam gear was super loose and I literally slipped the timing belt off. So I took the gear of and found that the one screw hole that holds it to the cam was egg shaped. So I thought that was weird. I started taking things off and putting the new stuff back on and I fired it up and it was making the same noise. Starting ripping into it to and found that the timing belt was ripped almost all the way through.

Now I know this is going to sound dumb but since I just replaced that timing belt I thought it would be good so I used that same one, but I don't know if it was ripped when I took the old head off or if I ripped it putting it back on or it ripped with the new head on. Now I know this is a long shot but anyone have any suggestions. I'm planning on getting a new timing belt obviously but I don't know what this could be. Since the cam gear was loose and it made it make the noise before and now the timing belt is loose and making the noise now as well, or it might not have anything to do with that at all.

My dads going to look at it soon but we are stumped beyond belief and I'd rather not take it somewhere and pay loads of money for something I prob could have done.

Please help, if you can't I don't need your stupid comments.

Umm I would say that most of what you are gunna get will be stupid comments, sorry. The thing about timing belts is they are meant to be installed only once, once they are installed they stretch and removing and installing then will stretch them even more. The loose cam gear who knows about that but a new one was obviously in order. just asking but did you replace the timing belt tensioner when you replaced the timing belt?

Dont take this wrong but think about what you have just said....It is nonsense...if a toothed rubber belt like a timing belt were to stretch what would happen to the pitch or spacing of the teeth on said belt?
how can a toothed belt that engages its teeth on gears and tensioners stretch?
I hear this daily....and it always makes me laugh that that is what people think....Timing belts snap when they fail not get longer because if they did they would no longer be able to engage on the cam gear or the crank gear or th aux gear

^^^ duh then it would break... BELTS STRETCH...

        LOL

Okay what do you mean by loose?

Also once you put the new belt and tensioner make sure you spin it at least twice to make sure it is in time.

nope. this has been discussed before - removing and retensioning a timing belt doesn't hurt anything. but if it's not relatively new it's worth replacing while you are there. anything under 10k just leave it be.

Yes I did replace the tensioner when I replaced the belt.

And about the gear being loose I could wiggle it around and the belt nearly slid off itself.

VW says that if you remove the belt-- that it SHOULD be replaced with its rotation going in the same direction as it was.-- A new belt is always a better choice though.

if the belt just slides off, then the tensioner isn't tensioning correctly.

I would just get a different cam gear, gearbolt, new belt, and be done with it.

Got it running today everything was ok. Only thing is it idles for a few seconds and shuts off and ran very rough when I drove it around the block. Only things that aren't hooked up are the thing to the canister and I don't think that's the problem but we haven't hooked the new o2 sensor from the new wiring harness. Could that be causing the no idle and jerky driving¿

Yeah, you probably impacted a valve when it slipped the belt. You're misfiring now because you have a bent valve.

Do a compression test and find out.

Well that really sucks if that happened. The car would jerk pretty bad when I drove it but sort of cleared up if I would step on it. Any other suggestions???

Go do a compression test before you waist your time anywhere else. If you did impact a valve you're going to want to know ASAP.

Make sure the internals are good. Then go looking for alternatives.
