do as much of the prep as you can yourself. my quote for full respray was about 1.5k. if i do all the sanding, prep, and primer than its down to 600.

prep is the biggest and most labor intensive part of doing paint..if its done right at least. but better prep = cleaner, better paintjob

okay thread revival. So my beloved sterling silver e30 is dead. I'm already looking at an AW e30 and a Scwharz Black one but because I fell soo much in love with sterling, I'm thinking about repainting the car back to silver.

would AW be a better option to repaint over in order to bring out the OEM sterling shine? The guy at the paint shop told me that since AW would be the easier since it is a brighter color like silver.

Damn, i just read this thread and was about to make an insightful response with a lot of first hand experience of doing an all-over from yellow to a gun metal. But, black to anything is less difficult. Unless you prep (well) look to spend 2-3 g's for a worth while, non-fucked up pj.

any particular reason as to why black would be a better platform for sterling silver? (forgive my lack of painting knowledge)

If I plan on it, the shop will be doing the stripping and prepping as well. The only thing I requested was not to have the engine bay painted (since I wanted it black anyway).

Respray it Silver, it will then be awesome again, then with the extra cash, redo you're interior red.

I waa actually wondering about this as i have an aw that has paint chipping on the rear passenger side but i was debating on a respray now or wait till i get pb vs. My current db's to do it...opinions? What would a typical good job cost? Or do you need pics to see the extent of paint chipping?

it seems like it should not matter what the original color is as long as they shot the whole car with primer first. check out my vw build thread.

Would be so useful to have a thread about reputable paint and body repair places on this site. I can think of few things worst than spending thousands of dollars for a service, while having to worry about hacks and scamers on top of that.

                          good thread.

how the hell are you getting a respray for that little. I have nearly that much in materials for my strip and respray. All PPG stuff ran me 1250ish in just materials

well as I mentioned, he is a family friend and he did offer to do this during his off hours so the offer was nice. BUT after hearing feedback from his customers and the poor reviews of his work (it was either a hit or miss), I decided not to mix with friends and business so I have since then consulted with outside sources for a brand new paint job for my most recent car.

I've actually heard mixed results from that. Since I'm not removing the paint all the way down to the metal,, I just don't want to risk having residue from the previous paint compromising the true shine of the new paint. But thats good to know also! that would mean my options are more broad
