I still don't understand why you want a 3.2 over a 3.5. It's a harder motor to find, with more problems, more issues, and less power. Why???

That's like saying 'I want herpes because it's the least curable of the STDs'

      DO IT.

I used a 3.2 because it was easily accessible and cheap, and because I honestly didn't know better at the time, but it turned out really fun and it was a cool learning experience.

It's not all that hard to convert a b32 to motronic 1.3 and it runs better as well.

Anyway I'm not saying it's the best motor to use but if he wanted to then why not. Besides if you get the right one they have a hotter cam and from what I hear would take turbo a bit better than a b35.

This was my original plan, I talked about it with my neighbor for a bit and the 3.5L used in 535i's from 1985-1988 is the motor that runs the best and there won't be as many problems.

What makes the 85-88 (e28) m30 run the best, compared to what? Is this something someone told you?

          I am curious.

shouldn't a 333i be a little quicker if it has all that torque and 194hp?
0-62 in 7.3 doesn't really sound that impressive.

It doesn't have the ECU problems the 3.2L has, it reacts very well to chips, and it is the most likely to come in a manual transmission. The M30 came in a lot of e23 and e26 and e28's that were automatic, the e28 535i from 85-88 is the most likely to result in a manual transmission.

Jean, what engine position did you use? It looks like position 2, is that right?

With that logic most E32/E34 B35s were automatic ;) AND have the right oil pan / sump. Keep in mind you can always get a g260/5 or g260/6 from another 5 speed car... actually in your case you can probably even use your m10 tranny as it will bolt up to the m30 engine since this is more of a show car. I went with a 260/6 since I'll be launching it on 225 wide race tires.

What ECU problems? The late model ECU (179) is the desired ecu with late model m30 cars.

True, the main reason is i'm making a 333i replica. I want the engine to be period correct. Technically I should be getting an m30b32, but I'll get an m30b34 and make the engraving on the block say 3.3 to look like it's the genuine block of the 333i.

Just get the B35, then. It's easier to fit into the engine bay, more POWAAAH, engine mounts are easier to find. The B35 is also "period-correct" for your car... the M30 has been around since the 60's, well into the mid-90's.

Well, B34 = more work to install and you are talking about 2 weeks to get it all done. and since you are all set on engraving the block etc, what difference does it make if you do the same to the b35? Just keep in mind that CA BAR look at everything.

PS. m10 head gasket is only about $50 from autohausaz last time I ordered it for my m10 :) This way you can get the m10 back on the road quickly and do the m30 swap right :)

                      Good luck dude!

Question for M30 swapists, will the M30b35 (from an e34) bolt up to the M10, while using engine position 3? (engine position 3 is the one where it's as far back in the car as it can go, parts of the firewall need to be removed, and a mechanical fan IS able to fit).

^ exactly my thoughts... this thread made my head hurt...

the m10 trans will work great despite what some may say

the b35 is a better motor if you plan to stay NA

the early m30's b28, b32 etc can all be changed to motronic and it improves the issues they had...

also the positions arent real, a german company making m30 swap mounts made them up for their mounts. you want to be the farthest back you can and anyone on this forum that makes mounts will put you just in that very spot ;)

scribing the block for some strange 333i rep crap seems just stupid to me...

now i will grab my popcorn and watch as you find out like we all have the m30 will not go in under a schedule...

you are not above the myth
