Yes, get it cleaned up as much as you can, presentation can't hurt. Even do a little scrubbing in the engine bay.
Do you have any images of the car at a car show? Maybe the E30 Picnic? Showing that the car was at a car show elevates it from a simple daily driver so something more special.
Yes, pull some favorable comparables from Craigslist and Autotrader for real world pricing.
We know that i motors are worth more than e motor E30s, but the adjuster might not know this (probably won't), so if you can slide a couple of i motor comps to bolster your price, go for it.
If you can present this homework to the adjuster right when you first meet, you'll have a better chance of starting at a higher price. Realize they have a dozen cars at any time to deal with, so anything you can do to help them justify a price and get one of their files finished will be good.
Of their 12 cars, most will be higher dollar cars with more complicated fixes. They will want to close something like this out fast. Remember for them it is not emotional. Just dig your feet in and be patient.
Point out that red is now a very sought after color in the E30 community. Point out that the E30 in general is becoming a collectibe car in the BMW enthusiast world, and show the August Roundel articles as proof. The average wrecked chick-car Carolla or Celebrity can't make that claim.
So Luke, Matt's coming over for Formula 1 Sunday at 6pm, come over if you have time. Watching Qualifying then the race back to back. Order chinese takeout.Lance Richert '88 M3, #35 PRO3, i3 etc.

Just follow the suggestions above. Have the car walk the walk (being clean) while you talk the talk about how great it was pre-collision.
I bought a wrecked E30 for parts and couldn't believe how much crap was in the trunk, in the footwells, etc. Not sure how the owner was able to negotiate any kind of decent value with the insurance company unless they didn't carry collision and thus it did not matter.
Did the hit crumple the trunk floor at all? Or crumple or dimple the rear fenders during compression? If they try to no big deal the hit, then those are telltail signs the impact got into the structure of the vehicle. Do the doors open and close OK, with the same gap between the rear of the door and the indent below the B-pillar?
A few more pics of those areas would help us.Lance Richert '88 M3, #35 PRO3, i3 etc.
