    am i fucked?!

    so i just got done finishing up my 87 325e. i started the car and it ran fine for a few min. i put the tires back on. it started up fine again and ran for a few more min. i come inside take a shower. i go back out to take the car for a drive. i start it up and its not really wanting to rev up. its smoking real bad so i pop the valve cover off. i find what looks like vomit.



    it has been raining rather hard here until this morning. the has sat without the hood for a bit. im guessing some water found its way in. this sound right? if so, am i fucked? what do i need to do to fix it? it is still starting so its not hydro locked or anything, but it isn't getting power. any ideas?

    at this point as soon as i fix one thing 2 things break. im pissed

      looks like you blew the head gasket. did you leave the car running while you jumped in the shower? what was it that you fixed?

        it was the head gasket that was just replaced. bolts were all touqured to the spec auto zone gave me, which was 45lb. and no the car sat off while i was in the shower, but it wasn't anymore than 30min between shut off and restart.

          Can't tell anything from your photos, but did you use new head bolts? Also, IIRC you torque the bolts then tighten another 1/4 turn after that.

            yes new bolts, and okay thanks the print out the guy gave me said 45lbs. drained oil its same shit. how can i drive it out? will wd40 do the trick or what? and sorry about bad pics. its a cream color. still has oil feels but seems nasty.

              ok so i wd40'd the shit outta the head and put two qts. of oil through it. still some of this cream shit in there so tomorrow i will repeat. also the head retourqued down. and extra 1/4 turn. hope this fixes it.

                mmmm milk shake. Get some engine flush once you change the gasket. Put some cheap oil and the engine flush in, Run for a little while and drain it out and do a full oil change with some GTX. should be fine.

                  the gasket was just changed. i think the problem was that the head bolts backed out a bit after the car being run. not much. it was only like 1/8 way from the 45lb on a few bolts, most where still at the 45lb mark. but i hope after adding the extra 1/4 turn it should be down enough not to leak the water over to the oil. there was no oil in the water. so i am flushing it with two qts tomorrow, then doing full oil change.

                        45lbs on head bolts??? autozone you say???
                        maybe im wrong as i havent done an m20 lately but that seems a bit light to me.

                          As of motor all data:

                          INSTALLING CYLINDER HEAD :

                          NOTE :
                          An improved cylinder head bolt has been introduced for use in the M20 engine. The new head bolt, designated ASA 14, is grade 10.9 and is identified by the Torx head and a black surface finish. Whenever engine repairs necessitate cylinder head removal, all 14 old style head bolts should be replaced with the ASA 14 bolts. Further, in instances of head bolt damage (e.g. head broken off), all 14 head bolts should be replaced one by one without removing the cylinder head. The waiting and running time requirements are no longer used.

                          The new ASA 14 head bolt has revised expansion properties which require new torque angle values.
                          Step 1 - Torque all bolts to 30 Nm (22 ft.lbs.) .
                          Step 2 - Torque angle all bolts 90°.
                          Step 3 - Torque angle all bolts 90° .

                          CAUTION : Under no circumstances should the old and new head bolts be mixed in one engine. Remove oil and debris from bolt holes. If not, improper values or damage may result.

                            Step 2 and 3 kind've confuse me. Couldn't you just Torque Angle all bolts 180 degrees once instead of 90 degrees twice? I could just be incredibly stupid and drunk though. Thanks.

                              No because you go through the bolt pattern again. I guess 3 times total.
