    Snow Driving

How's everyone doing on the snow (if you have any yet)? We had 3 cm of wet snow Monday, all I can say is ABS is pretty much the best thing since sliced bread. Avoided an accident that would have totaled the E30 because of it. Stupid minivan-driving soccer moms that turn out of a mall right into the lane your in.

Also, what kind of tires are you guys running? I just bought 4 Bilzzak WS-50's. Worlds better than the Cooper Cobras in rain. I have more control with the bilzzaks in snow than the Cobras in rain. Thank god the original owner ordered a LSD.

    Keep it slideways!!

Gotta love them soccer moms. At least they're all buying SUVs now, so they won't slide around quite so much as the infamous Caravan. Unfortunately SUVs are hideous and I'm tired of driving around seeing them everywhere I go.

Oh yah, this was about snow tires.
    ...
    ...I got no idea ;)

Not to mention SUV are tall, big and heavy; thus causing a lotta damage if they do crash. :(

Nokian NRW's on Fittipaldi rims here. LSD gets me out of everything really. ABS still disconnected, probably putting the front lines back on next week.

We only had snow on the ground here one day for the season so far (Monday), and I took a study break to go see how much the E46 likes abuse. Turns out all that electronic crap (with ASC/DSC off) does a half-decent job at pretending to be an LSD in the snow/ice. I was impressed, but these new pretty BMW's still need real diffs. But it'll still keep the tail out, opposite lock, for about 50ft of parking lot. :D

Honestly, I don't think anything besides Gran Turismo tought me more about weight transfer and general driving dynamics than messing around in the snow. I love it.

          ABS is the devil.
You should never need it. Learn to threshold brake, its faster stopping than ABS.

I went out in the ice/snow storm we had and had no issues. Cheapy Winterforce's on bottlecaps.

Also been documented repeatedly that ABS makes snow/ice stops quite a bit longer.

I don't know if I'm good enough to maintain steering during braking with threshold on ice though, but I'll be damned if I don't try next time it snows.

it's not supposed to make stopping distances shorter. it's supposed to keep your wheels from locking up so you can still steer. and 99% of the people on this forum probably aren't threshold braking masters either, so that's a moot point.

Well, ABS is much better when you aren't expecting a thing and have to act really fast. Try to threshold brake while switching lanes, trying not to hit the curb/snow and a fat soccer mom.

My parts car has Nokias, well had. Until the stupid punks punctured all of them. Moved the car after that (really was a PITA). I don't know how they are on snow but they made a great gravel tire!

Until you need to stop or turn. Your logic matches the average SUV driver's.

I've been teaching this at driving schools for over 3 years....

                          ;)
Its not that hard... go find an empty parking lot and practice next time it snows.
Its instances like you describe where THB is most valuable.

either way, this is about snow tires or something.. not braking

Nokian hakkapellita Q's (studless) 1 season old

drive slow, and watch out for other doing stupod shit. I've lived in snow country long enough that I'm plenty confident in my own driving abilities in snow, but its others that worry me.

Last year on the first big dump of the season, as I was heading up the hill I witnessed a car flip over the side. An A6 Avant with Quattro. It went off the edge because it was hit by a Yukon that was sliding sideways down the road.

It's people like that that make winter driving as dangerous as it is.
My mountains are better than yours.
