I didn't read the thread, but I have this to say: If you are going to change cars with your child in mind, but the most reliable, safe vehicle you can reasonably afford. Fuck looks, brand loyalty etc. At least for this point in your life, you need to keep your priorities in order.

Have to agree with the voices of reason here - if you trade your E30 for another car, you have to think about the value equation. What is your car worth (ie, Kelley Blue Book value for personal sales) and what else can you get for that amount? If we're all honest with ourselves, we know that our cars are not intrinsically worth a whole lot, and I don't think you can get a better quality car for the same money than what you already have.

If you choose to dismiss my opinions as well, its fine - opinions are worth exactly what you paid for them, so no harm done. But I'm not one of the "still living at home and getting hand-me-downs" crowd, I pay all my own bills, and so on. I find the E30 with the sport seats to be one of the most comfortable cars I've driven because of the adjustability and support of the seats and the driving position. If you have spinal issues, this may be different for you. I also think that if reliability is of major concern for you, you should at least consider investing in upgrading / refreshing your E30. Mine has been very dependable, and is a high-mileage car.

For safety's sake, I won't argue that an E30 is as safe as a car incorporating all of the major technological improvements of a more recent vintage, but if you're looking for a straight trade, then you can't get one of those anyway. At least you know your E30 is all steel and at least on the older ones has big steel bumpers sticking way out.

If you're set on getting rid of the BMW, then sell it - there's a classifieds section on this forum - and use the funds as a very small part of your down payment on something newer and bigger, and good luck.
