I'm sure the insurance company cares.

I had a professional appraisal done on mine

it was worse for me, the insurance company came up with 3 high mileage 92 E36 325i's as comps, which are shitty cars and their values reflect that. I think the first offer was $2300.

after my appraiser and the insurance companie's appraiser met, they came to an agreement of $7000. I did have a stack of receipts and a CD of pictures of the work I had done to my car to back me up. And yes that did matter.

the appraisal was only $100, and definitely worth the effort.

The kbb on most of our cars is under 3k and it being a car with semi high miles the dealer would give you a guess at what they could sell it for, which would be about 2500. Just find some local cars that are in very close shape to the one you lost and show the insurance the price on those. Also try to find ads by people that semi know the car and not some old lady, or kid who thinks the car is shit and is just trying to unload it.
if your insurance company doesn't suck, they don't use KBB to value your car.
