Cant budge the diff fill plug - Any suggestions?

This is posted in the tech forum, but more people come here..soooo.. pardon the double post.

I cannot budge my diff fill plug. (Glad I didnt get the drain plug out first, right....)

Using the BavAuto BMW specific socket and a ratchet ( I broke two ratchets trying to get this fdcker out) and spraying with pen oil still wont budge.

Im going to get a short breaker bar 3/8 drive as that is what is needed for the socket. Any other ideas???

Hit it with an instant shot of torque. Put a breaker bar on it and hit the breaker bar with a 5lb sledge.

If the plug doesn't come out just get a new diff cover and gasket. You should be able to find a used diff cover with plugs for $25 or so.

you could also try putting a pipe on the breaker bar for more leverage

What he said. If all else fails... diff covers are easily found.

breaker bar + muscle usually does the trick. you'll hear a rediculous crack noise as it loosens up too :-)

using a rachet to break a stuck bolt free is an excercise in futility. buy a breaker bar, they're like $15..

Pull the cover and put the fucker in a vice with a 6 ft. breaker bar or an impact. It'll come loose.

Had a similar issue with the transmission fill plug recently. Ruined a ratchet trying to loosen the plug with a cheater. Breaker bar & muscle finally got it free.

one other note, unless you really like breaking tools, buy a 1/2 inch drive breaker bar to get that plug loose, not a 3/8. you will just snap the metal square that goes into the socket with 3/8ths if youve already broken ratchets. and putting cheater pipe may help, but thats a do at your own risk as well.

{ninja edit} or try a 6 point wrench and a dead blow hammer. and use pb blaster. you can take apart the whole goddamn world with that stuff.

try using the fire axe. (lil bit of heat=torch) heat the cover up a bit around the plug. not directly on the plug. this will expand the the metal a bit thus making easy to remove.
ive done it lots of times on diffs, trannies,& transfer cases.

Am getting a breaker bar, and will try the heater on the cover AROUND the plug. ( I get it!!)

Are the tranny plugs as hard as these diff plugs???

                              Thanks for the comments guys...
