I think the c3 chassis 5000 quattro avant would be a good choice, a chip and wastegate spring they can be pretty quick.

I like my friend's Gen3 Subaru Outback wagon. It has had a full Version 7 STi conversion (2001 JDM STi Impreza EJ207 engine, 6MT, R180 diff customised to fit multi-link rear), as well as alloy front arms, STi steering rack, power steering cooler, front-mount intercooler, Bosch fuel pump, factory tunable 2001 STi ECU, V2 STi RA seats from my old car, STi RSK Legacy 9000rpm cluster, RSK Bilstein struts (w/Whiteline springs), Brembo brakes, de-lifted (remove chassis spacer, change steering knuckle) etc, etc. It's so much fun to drive and quite nice around town...

That's his car in my garage. We're putting a new engine in it after his 2.0 threw a big-end on the track. Something went badly wrong and it cracked the heads around the spark plug bores, scuffed all the bores and trashed the pistons and bearings.

There is a new STi EJ257 2.5L short motor coming, along with CP pistons, LS1 rings, ARP head studs, ARP Race bearings, ported heads, JDM Impreza STi Spec C cams (more lift + duration), parallel fuel rails, catch cans, GT Spec headers, custom up-pipe and a TD06 turbo. Should haul around 240kW @ wheels once we've got it tuned and run-in.

engine bay pics from the company who converted it (AM Auto in Noosa, QLD for any Aussies reading this - go see Al for any fab/custom work! Top guy, great shop!)

The outbacks are nice enough but in stock trim (ie: w/o swap) they are sooooo slow.

                    6-cylinder ones are ok...

                    ... once you add a GT4088R

Note: that engine is in a stock-looking '97 Legacy sedan.

                        This is a fun thread.
I love wagons, and there are some fantastic posts here.
However after reading your thread it sounds like you're on a tight budget.

Because of this i would suggest you narrow down your search to the 1st and 2nd generation Subaru Legacy wagons. The Legacy GT in particular is pretty sick.

                        I owned a 1991.
                        It was a solid wagon.
Not once did I have an issue with it.

Got 2 Benz 4matic wagons that are great daily drivers. Big safe and good in the snow.

                              I always liked the M5's, E55/63's and RS6 wagons.

Some of the old AMG Wagons are really cool.
