    m42 makes 130bhp

    With these mods:
-K&N cone intake with custom shroud
    -2.25" cat-back exhaust
    -MarkD 93 octane chip
    -COP conversion
    - +5 degrees on intake came timing

you can get maybe 160bhp...best case scenario.

So yeah, 180bhp sounds like a stretch. For 180bhp, you'd need all of the above plus cams and ITBs...which I've been told isn't really worth it given the cost.
Only thing from that list that may add real power is the MarkD chip.

M42's are great motors. Good on gas and virtually no maintenance. I've had mine for about 50k miles; daily driving, cross country, track days, autocross. Haven't done anything but fluid changes and new plugs.

And let's get real guys, not like the M20B25 is a powerhouse...

    EDIT: Where's the Rob option......?

      Really!?!?

I heard the cone filter is good for a few ponies (maybe 3bhp). I heard advancing the intake timing adds around 7bhp, and I was told the muffler on the stock exhaust is a huge bottleneck, so the cat-back exhaust mod adds more than one would expect.

So based on the vote percentages.

Should the title of this thread be changed to.

" Why do SOME people hate the 318 so much?"

I'm with you there. Hopefully the M50 tides me over.

I think your hp decreases with a cone filter, instead of the stock airbox.

About half way down the page theres a link to a Grassroots MS Article

Edit: Well it doesnt decrease, but it doesnt do any good I guess, I duuno. I rock the stock box with a K&N filter and its fine.

I never said "BHP" either. I guess the article must have been wrong about the forged internals? Anyway, the mag was pumping up a tuning company who made a chip- it wasn't the Mark D one. I will find this...

                  edit:

so you mean 180 wheel horsepower, then? because that's even more retarded.

or do you mean you don't have a clue?

Ouch dude. Grumpy this morning! I thought BHP was the same as wheel horsepower... I must be wrong. I meant crank horsepower/flywheel horsepower. I have no idea where to find that article other than the link provided, maybe someone has a copy of April (I think it's April) Total BMW?

the article was most likely a sponsored peice to sell people on the idea that magic bolt ons are going to gain you 60 horsepower at the crank on a 1.8l motor. if you believe that is possible I have a bridge to sell you.

180-134 original = 46, not 60. The article may even say 178, I rounded up to 180. I need someone to find it for exact details. I swear the article says the crank is forged. Not trying to battle you on this!

All that stuff is probably good for 5 to 8 whp max.

The M42 exhaust is already pretty good. It uses nearly 2.25" tubing throughout. The resonator I suspect is a large impedance to exhaust flow, as it is tiny, yet damps out a lot of sound.

even if it's forged, it doesn't matter to the performance of the motor. I do like 318is but there's just not much potential in there without basically replacing/upgrading everything at a great cost.

I totally agree, that's why I swapped an m50 in my car! :) I was just arguing the points totalbmw said, which is that it is designed well and is not a total heap of crap! The forged aspect would obviously be desirable for turbo guys. I've been to BenM's shop a few times to buy parts but I have yet to see his dad's turbo m42.
