Why Do People hate the 318 so much?

i love the m42 engine the gas mileage traveling from santa ana to LA constantly. i gotta say i enjoy driving my 318is more than the last two 325i with m20b25's. i guess it comes to prefference and what youre going to use them for.

My 318i is slow as slow can be, but I was used to some cars with 3 times the HP.
If you think back to 1984, it was a decently quick car.
Not fast, but (then) not a dog.

It handles great, despite being stock, and it's a blast to drive slow.
I love driving it.

For DD duties an M42 is boring as watching Martha Stewart on TV. It also has a crap timing case design IMO. Bad oil pump? Enjoy removing the harmonic dampener, crank bolt, and timing cover.

udel... i have never been inside of an m42...im sure that they are good engines but just from my experince ...i just feel better with a chain.

I have a love/hate relationship with the 318is. I love the car. The motor is just seriously flawed. And gutless. But that doesn't mean I wouldn't drive one. ;)
