    SACRAMENTO, Calif. --

Alcohol may have played a role in a Sacramento single-car crash that left the driver with serious injuries, the California Highway Patrol said.

The CHP said a northbound BMW was exiting Interstate 5 at Del Paso Road shortly before 4 a.m. Thursday when the driver lost control of the car, causing it to leave the road and hit a tree.

The rear of the car was torn off and the driver was ejected, the CHP said.

The driver, who was found unconscious, was taken to a local hospital.

The CHP said at least one occupant of the car may have been drinking prior to the crash.

A passenger who was in the car was being interviewed by the CHP

How come it looks like the back end of the car is still there, even though the article says it was torn off?

Because you're looking at the wrong side of the car. Look at the slideshow on the right side of the page.

Handling caracteristics and engine power are not related.

" Lift-off oversteer (also known as snap-oversteer, trailing-throttle oversteer, throttle off oversteer, or lift-throttle oversteer) is a form of oversteer in an automobile that occurs when the vertical load on the tires shifts from the rear to the front quickly due to throttle release while cornering. This decrease in vertical load causes a decrease in the lateral force generated by the rear axle, so the axle starts to accelerate towards the outside of the turn. This steers the car more tightly into the turn, hence causing oversteer. In essence, this means that easing off the gas causes the rear wheels to break away suddenly, with the potential for the car to leave the road tail first."
Brake harder. Go faster. No shit.

Yeah it's true, though I'm somewhat surprised they'd mention an E21. I guess to some people a BMW is a BMW no matter what vintage.
