just like BMW, would you buy one Made in Germany, or Made in somewhere else?

Or an authentic western Cheese Burger from a place like Denny's or Chinese restaurant ?

Had an 02 tacoma. Thought it was the shit till it started stalling (at about 20k miles) After several visits to the dealer and them not being able to reproduce the problem they finally told me to live with it or trade it in. It was traded in for a titan that has been going strong. Also the prius dashboard and glove box are crap. The trunk panels on scions suck balls. I've seen hundreds with the panel missing, dangling, or taped on.

I've seen first hand several 90's model v6's cracking on the block where the motor mounts are. Pretty fucked up design flaw.

The Lexus has a pushbutton ignition, not a key. You can't cancel it while the vehicle is moving. Also, it has an electronic lockout to prevent you from downshifting to certain gears while at speed, and locks out neutral while the throttle is open.

You know, to protect the car.

Shut up and let the engineers drive.

You can cancel with the push button start...you have to hold it in for 3 seconds.

As a component manufacturer you are asked to bid on the cost to build a product to Company T's specs. You are often given very specific design parameters to adhere to, as well as material specs which you have to obey. (you can't, for instance, place chocolate pudding in a CV joint) You submit a pre-production prototype(s) for approval from both Engineering and R & D departments for durability & fitment testing. This testing usually goes on for several months. Engineering sends back prototypes along with a list of changes they would like to see. Changes are made, new prototypes built & re-submitted. This process goes on until both parties are satisfied & a production costing & release schedule is agreed upon. Manufacturer then starts production & every shipment will be met @ the receiving door by Company T's QC dept. All items are either accepted (met spec) or denied (sent back for rework). Accepted components then go into production line and Company T rolls out a finished good badged & sold as "Company T Product."

Some examples of outsourced components in a typical car:

              -frames (pickups, SUVs)
              -glass
              -dashboards
              -gauge clusters
              -seats
              -steering wheels
              -tires
              -batteries
              -starter motors
              -gaskets
              -pumps (fuel, water, oil)
              -seatbelts
              -airbags
              -latch mechanisms
              -carpeting & sound proofing
              -radio & communications
              -switchgear
              -HVAC systems
              -braking systems
              -bearings
              -axles
              -transmissions
              -bushings
              -tie rods
              -etc.
              -etc.
              -etc.

My point is: auto manufacturers are pretty much just designers & assemblers these days. Most of the actual manufacturing is done off-site. If Toyota/Mercedes/GM can take credit for their reliability & build quality for all these years, then they MUST be willing to take the blame for their failures in the same manner. To Toyota's credit, it sounds like they are doing just that this time.

You have no idea how toyota awards contracts.

Ford Motor Co. has stopped production of a full-size commercial vehicle in China after discovering that the gas pedal used came from the supplier involved in the recall at Toyota Motor Co.

I was disappointed to see that the prius wasnt on the list. I fucking hate all of those cars and the shitty yuppie drivers that attemp to drive them. Get the fuck out of my way you hypermiling homos. Go buy a Jetta Diesel that gets better fuel mileage and does not need a fucking change of batteries in 5 years. Those dumb tree-hugging fucks will loose all of their 'savings' in fuel when they need to replace them. The method of production of the batteries and the waste they create in the landfills adds up to be worse then a normal car over its entire lifetime. FUCK YOU PRIUS! (and new insight that looks fucking identical)

I've been awarded contracts by several large OEMs. Some were Japanese. I know the process.

You're a fucking moron if you think that "study" about Prius batteries was even remotely legitimate.

PS: Prius Batteries are warrantied for 8 years or 100k miles.

People tend to freak about "unintended acceleration" after the '80s Audi problems. I own a Tundra that is under the recall and I'm not worried a bit about it ;)
