Makes me glad I did the slushbox -> 5 speed swap.

Heck, I like shifting so much, i put in a 4.27 rear end. I can be in 5th by 30mph, and not lug. Makes me want to to a T56 swap, so I can have even more gears to play with.

But seriously, this is sad. You can barely even buy a diesel pickup with a manual gearbox anymore. What happened to being able to use torque?

      Manual toyota tacoma FTW!

I could care less what everyone else is driving as long as real cars continue to be offered with manual transmissions.

That truck is hard to find (here) with a manual, I know as I went shopping last year with a friend and the dealership basically told us there were 2 manual 2WD Tacoma's in the country, and the overwhelming majority of 4WD's were automatics. Toyota's overall manual offerings are dwindling to nearly 0 -- you can get what, the Tacoma, Yaris, and Corolla with 5 speeds?

Emissions standards and throttle lag make driving newer manuals less engaging, as you're constantly fighting rev hang to make fast and smooth shifts. Hopefully direct injection will push things back the other way, but we'll see.

ODBII brought that about. Try driving an explorer in the sub 2k range. every time you step on the clutch, the revs go UP.

They can shift better than all of you too.

With no creeper gear, the auto is actually better for towing. Nowadays, anyway.

They are legally automatic, so of course they show up that way in the stats.

You also have to think of the fact that an automatic today is LIGHT YEARS better than the old 3 speed slush boxes of yesteryear. All our cars are 5 speeds. Even my wife, who is not an enthusiast prefers a 5 speed as it keeps her connected to the task at hand.

It's not OBD II. It's emissions standards for unburnt fuel.

OBD II can have great throttle response. There's nothing inherently bad about it. It's just that a lot of bad shit was done to a lot of cars around the same time.

God forbid someone not be able to comfortably devour a McGriddle, yak on their silly cell, and pick their nose while driving. I thoroughly enjoyed my manual cars.

when I was going to school last year I an pretty sure that I heard someone say that 25 years ago about 15% of the cars sold by BMW were automatic- and nowadays it is the opposite. Even here in Germany where Autos were unheard of at work I would have to agree that atleast 70% of the car I work on are autos. crappy traffic jams and crowded streets are killing it over here.
