Those of you with Air Bag Steering/Or Had it...

What are the options for a conversion? Can any wheel do as long as you have the proper Hub Adapter? Or..will some steering wheels sit to close to the lever switches?

All you need is an appropriate hub adaptor. Also the SRS light will flash in the roof display panel, so I just unplugged the light.

Remove lower knee bolster, on the upper left side there are 3 connectors orange and yellow, unplug connectors (leave car off), then remove the little panel on the lower, upper part of the steering column. Unplug the yellow connector.

Then remove the 2 torx bolts on the back of the steering wheel, this will remove the airbag. Pull off the airbag and feed the connector threw.

Then remove the 22mm nut, turn on key to unlock the wheel (don't rotate).

      Pull off wheel....

Then put on new wheel made for a E30 will fit, but you will NEED a small spacer to go on the inside of the wheel right behind the 22mm nut, if not the wheel will be loose and go in/out a little. I made a spacer out of a old piece of small coolant hose.

Removing those connectors will prevent the airbag from deploying while removing it, corretct?

Yes, if the bag gets no power it will not deploy, the one on the steering column, is for the airbag, but if you turn the car on with it disconnected, you will get the blinking red SRS light.

                What they said.

Another airbag related question though....to keep the thread going.

I installed a MOMO in my '91, so I still have the orange airbag sensors under the hood. I want to remove these, as well as the wiring that comes out of them, but they are secured with hardware that I have never seen. It's like a torx bolt, but with a raised nub in the middle. Does anyone know what I am talking about? If so, do you know where to get a socket to remove them?

I suppose BMW dealers have the tool, so I might try that. Another option would be to buy the proper torx socket and drill a hole in the middle to fit over the 'nub.'

It's called tamper resistant torx, and Lisle makes a set for ratchets that Sears sells for $27.99. I don't know where you can get individual ones though.

You have to have the key in and turn it to the aux position so that the wheel lock is off.

Adding on to what everyone else is saying, you can switch to e28 stalks. The e28 stalks push back the levers around an inch compared to standard e30 stalks.
However, you might find that when you switch stalks, the function where you pull back on the left side lever and the brights come on will not work anymore.

Funny, I swapped in the Mtech 1 in my airbag wheel and the SRS light never came up.....

Heres the wheel & the reason I ordered a new turn signal stalk yesterday

I don't have an srs issue cause I got a german check panel, has no seatbelt or SRS light. All black in there!
