So, get your car up to temp by racing around your block a few times. Then get your spray can out the trunk (the racing helped shake it). Shake it some more, then just go spray your manifolds while they are hot. It helps the paint stick. You'll only be able to paint the surfaces you can see, but thats all that matters anyway right?

Ok Jet hot quote for the manifolds are 120 and powder wrinkle black finish on valve cover and intake manifold is 100 for both. So for 220 plus new plug wires, hoses, and gaskets I should have a very clean engine bay. That will be one project to mark off the list. Next is powder for the calipers when I have to do brakes this summer. Then on to new leather and then paint in the fall.

Just for reference, I sandblasted my stock exhaust manifolds and painted them with High temp paint. I believe it was the 1200 degree stuff or the 1400 degree stuff and it hasnt come off or flaked in 3 years. I think most people's problem is painting over the rust.RIP e30 (brilliantrot '91 325i) 11/17/06 Byebye: 8/21/07

I did a bunch of reading on this yesterday and it sounds like the biggest issue is not only cleaning the surface but keeping oils off of the paint once its installed. The boards i was reading said not only to have gloves on while cleaning but when installing to. the oils on your hands will react to the heat and that's where the paint will start to flake.

i would like to put one fact back into play.
this is just a dress up the engine bay,
no need to spend over 20 bucks.
the paint has been beaten to death.
lets consider a really BIG heat sheild.
one that spans the entire rusted out manifold
it would be easy to fabricate onto the already new shealds, and can just continue into your inner fender.
FTW.
