If you do a bit more research on these statistics you find that the dimbulb "1 Series are FWD" answers were 3 and 5 door 1 Series owners, ie. appliance car buyers. BMW said just about ALL the 1 series coupe buyer knew the 1 Coupe was rear wheel drive. Check out BMWBlog.com. Jeez, I gotta stop posting comments in threads after having a Margarita.

I remember when the E30 was first sold in the states. I remember the type folks that had them back when they were new.
I would say the same percentage of E30 buyers back in the day either had no idea of the drivetrain layout, and fewer even gave a shit.
In the U.S. it has always been about the Roundel on the hood, and trunk.
The humor is the BMW E30 was arguably the ultimate Yuppie mobile of the late 80s and early 90s. It just became something as they started to move out of the hands of yuppies into the enthusiasts.

Now e30 guys make fun of E90 guys... which is the new yuppie mobile.

                      Exactly.
Things have not changed, BMW owners 30 years ago were just a clueless about their cars, as the 1 series owners that were polled...
                      Tis nothing new.

But that's the way it is! :)
