i've had an offset license plate on my rx8 for quite awhile (over a year) and i have not been hassled at all for it.

in fact, i havent been pulled over since 2 weeks after i bought the car (nearly 3 years ago.) but maybe CA is different...

i was kind of thinking about that. it has me leaning towards the VW mk3/4 a little bit since they're newer but you can't floss in a VW like you would in a bimmer

First off I've got to say your screen name belongs to Porsche, not BMW's. We don't have our engines hanging past the rear wheels.

You will not get much "floss" in a e30 (unless your name is Vlad.) I'm sorry but the VW crowd has way more girls in it than the e30 groups. If your looking for "floss" I might recommend a e46 m3 or something of those sorts.
