You are a private seller. There is NOTHING they can do legally. Not that this really makes any difference, but do they live in NJ too?
If they are out of state, they cannot do A N Y T H I N G because even if there WAS a NJ law covering private sales, it is voided when it is an out of state buyer.

so you sold a kid (who couldn't even drive a manual) a car, that broke...

sounds to me, largely a classic case of driver failure, either heavy left foot or perma-foot.

good news is, the car might be back up for sale for a fraction of what you got for it, and you could eve scoop it back up with profit

]it might be the car- (tempermental i know) choosing (or "not" choosing) its next owner. (like Christine or something) ..

who knows...sold the car to get another car that could accomodate 2 kids..so I wouldn't be interested in buying it back...I only put 7K miles on it in 3 years.

        Oh well...we live and learn.

As shitty as it might sound, you can tell them to fuck off. There is nothing they can do legally. They are not protected under Lemon Law so wtf are they gonna sue for? I am a dealer and can tell you from experience that situations like this suck coz we r all human and sometimes do feel bad for other, BUT shit happens and you cant blame the seller for a bad used car when you buy an old car with many miles and no warranty.
