    Hmm... jobs... (long read)

Well, its that time of year again--time to get a job! I'll be working over my summer break, and I'd really like to work with cars. However, being 18 proposes somewhat of a challenge on my job opportunities. Although I could probably easily get a job at like an Iffy Lube or something along the lines of that, I'd truly like to work at a mechanic's shop or a stealership. Considering how I live in a metropolitan area, there are plenty of shops and dealerships to choose from!

There is one shop I always take my car to, and the head mechanic, Jan, knows my face and my car. People suggested I should get a job as a parts runner or kind of just like a mechanic's bitch to do the simple, mundane things that need to be done around the shop. I also wouldn't mind working for Leith BMW, and I've read that working at a dealership opens up jobs like a car porter (or whatever the title is for moving cars around) or a detailer, but I wonder if I could get a job working in the parts department since I know a lot about what goes on BMWs.

Basically, I'm just askign if anybody has any sort of experience in this situation and would like to share some hints or tips. Considering as how I'm always tinkering with my car, I'd be willing to work constantly because I have a strong passion for cars and I really have nothing else to do! Like I said, I wouldn't mind working at an Iffy Lube, but I'd rather work at a place thats geared more towards European/BMW cars. I'll prettymuch do whatever, but I know I don't want to sell the cars. All I know is that I don't want to go back to the food industry. Yuck.

Mark: "Didn't you just break a rocker arm?"
Me: "Yeah, I don't think I've learned my lesson."
    Mark: "You never will."

Basically, all you can do at this point is fill out applications and drop them off. Its best to get started early before all the high school kids that start looking for jobs the first week after school gets out. Its nice being in college and getting out of school a month before public high school.

I work at a VW dealership here in Vancouver. If you apply right before summer like it sounds like you are and go in and check every couple days after you turn in your application you should get a job. Make sure every time you go in you try to talk to someone more than just a secretary. They hire a bunch of lot attendants right before summer and the job is a ton of fun durring summer time. Sucks in the winter cause it is slow and you work alone most of the time.

Sounds like I have a decent chance at getting a job. I'll definitely get an application this weekend!

Just don't get into the detailing dept. It's a motherfucker, they drive you to work very hard and you will be underpaid.

I got my job at the dealership (car porter for saturday carwash, not a real job) by hearing they needed people and filling out an app. But I got lots of friends work there by having them come in and get hired.

I'd talk to them and see if you cannot get something more than just "dropping off an app" I've had more apps not used than I have, and conversation helps. Or let everyone you know be informed you are looking for work. Called networking, even now.

I read that I should just kind of wander around and talk to some of the employees and kind of push my way through to talk to the manager in which I would talk to him/her about what I'm trying to do.

it's a good idea to talk to them, just walking in and dropping off an application without talking to anyone will almost never land you a job.

Yeah, I'll make sure they know I've visited. Man, its been forever since I've looked for a job.
