Can you point me to the thread about not changing the booster?

Also, most people's reasons for swapping motors are for more midrange and less miles. I agree with you though that for cost, a rebuilt m20 head > 150k mile m50.

Thread wasn't about not changing the booster, but it was just another m50 swap...

where'es the coolant tank located at? Does it have a tooth gear in between the fan and block?

Is your car an auto or manual? I thought my car was an eta engine at one point because it oculdnt r3v past 5k but it turns out that my auto trans was dying,.

          That's really the stock booster?

eta booster, yes. Can't fit a pce of paper in there, but it does really fit. solid motor mounts and stock booster would be ideal, but there was very little evidence of rubbing. The eta (maybe early chassis) booster has the vac fitting on the pass side of the reservoir, unlike the 325i's (maybe late model?) driver-side vac point.

Wow that is quite interesting, I have an e21 booster and it barely rubs on the fins.

I didn't say it works good lol. I would actually make mounts to angle the engine slightly to the pass side if it were my car, but like I said, the car came to us in shambles and we only had a limited amount of time to get the car able to drive to NY. Three nights in a row (after our 9-5 jobs) we worked till 4am, then some trying to figure out what the bozo was thinking that did the swap. Worst part is my friend had a 98 m50 complete with trans and ECU, and somehow ended up with a 93 motor, busted trans, backward clutch puck, no harness adapter, and no ECU...He didn't like our quote on the swap in our place, but guess who ended up fixing things? :(

I did my entire swap alone (had a friend help once or twice) with hand tools. I had to have a shop do the exhaust work, but I've heard you can do that for about a hundred bucks elsewhere (my shop bent me over to the tune of $300, sore subject).

$80 jy head, $50 for the machining.
                  $57 water pump
                  $42 timing belt
(forget the $$ on the tensioner)
                  $1.80 jy wires
                  $17 jy 173 ecu
                  $27 jy harness
$19 Castrol GTX and Purolator filter
                  re-used mani gaskets
~$5 in ROL gasket maker material
                  ~$5 tube of silicone
                  $32 jy manifold
(forget the $$ for the TB)
                  $12 coolant
                  $8 IAC
                  $27 AFM
                  $12 valve cover
                  $16 crank trigger wheel
                  $40 head gasket

I'd say less than $500 for almost the same performance of a $600 m50 using all stock e30 parts that bolt on/in
Right, but what is that, just a 2.7 bottom end with a junkyard 885 head? That's not going to take an M50. MAYBE you'll have a chance if you get a tune and the M50's tune is stock, and you'll have a good chance with a cam, but a 2.7i with a stock 173... I just don't see that happening. Say, in a perfect world, if you up the displacement your power is proportionally increased. Ricer math would put you at 180bhp, but your motor will be more tired, and you're actually decreasing compression ratio... and the M50 will still have the 12lb flywheel while you're stuck with either the dual mass eta paperweight or a stock i fly... blah blah blah. Bottom line I am still bench racing--anything can happen--but I just don't see it happening.

Also, things like coolant and oil you can leave out since you'll need them with either swap, but that doesn't change your cost much.

Danny, you may want to shim your driver's side motor mount a bit to get it to clear the booster better. I can't remember how stiff your mounts are but your epic S50 toarks are going to move your motor around.

i agree with the whole DOHC swap thing now. Man those m20's ticky valves are quite annoying. sounds like my engine is about to explode.

While I am not exactly excited to admit it, that was one of my reasons as well.

yah now i get the whole thing. so is it possible to get an m50 to make at least 200whp? that would be more than enough for me. also a swap that i could actually do my self.

So M3 cams, ebay header and a chip could hit 200 in a solid b25tu? I think I have a line on a set on the cheap.
