    Hydro vs. Hybrid

I'm writing a research paper for my english class on this and I was curious if any of you guys know much about the hydrogen and hybrid cars. Any links and or direction to articles etc would be great.

    TIA

Search on germancarfans.com - they have a bunch of articles about the hydrogen technology BMW is developing.

I know Honda Civic / Accord have hyrbids, and the Toyota Prius, maybe that helps?

I did a paper on this earlier this semester.
Are you guys trying to steal my papers?

hydrogen would be great if it didn't take more energy to create the hydrogen than what comes out of it.

If you look at some of the latest new car offerings at dealers you will notice that hybrids are much more common than the hydrogens. The latter seems to be more popular in European markets for autos. Over here in the States, hydrogen is widely used in the bus system of many large cities and fleet-based vehicles.

For cars though, hybrid power is catching on in the US. Toyota has its Prius, Honda has the Insight, Accord and Civic, and Ford is marketing their Escape SUV in a hybrid package. We can expect more of this technology being developed for the US market, especially with the shift in dynamics of the petroleum market with China on the rise. As for the US market going in the direction of hybrid vs. hydrogen? My guess is the technology is there, although its not 'affordable' just yet. Sticker prices on hybrids compared to their petrol-only siblings reflect a noticable mark-up.

I also heard that GM came out with the first hybrid pickup.

I think that hybrid is better, b/c as nando mentioned it takes gas to make hydrogen, So with that being said I would imagine we will be driving hydrogen b/c oil company's are car makers best friends and they wouldn't want to piss them off.

It doesn't neccisarrily take gas. It takes electrcity to create hydrogen, which inturn comes from a power plant, which could be run off of coal or hydroelectric power.

I do know for a fact that Cheveron has built and put into operation 5 differnt hydrogen fueling stations. They teamed up with Hyundai I beleve and they are doing a test with Hyundai's cars to show the gains of hydrogen fueled cars.

As far as information you want, do you want to know how it works, or more things about the technology? www.howstuffworks.com will explain how both work if that is what you need. They should have some links also to other places of interest.

but you still put far more energy into creating the hydrogen than what you get out of it, and as far as I know neither coal or hydroelectric power are environmentally friendly (especially coal), so the point about hydrogen's only emission being water is moot.

it just makes more sense to keep using oil for fuel but making cars more efficient with electric motors. not unless somebody finds a magical source of free hydrogen anyway...

IMO hybrids are a waste of time, they are just a temporary fix to make us feel like were doing something to help the inviroment and ween ourselves off gas.. considering they too use gasoline. :|

I just hope hydrogen powerplant will be able to produce power comprable to a gas engine. I really know nothin about it, im making the assumption that hydrogen at this point in time doesnt compare to gas in power output.

though energy transfer is ineffecent i would have to say that the main problem is the fact that we are using (mainly) coal and gas to power our socitey. nuclear power plant release less radiation than coal plants & don't make green house gases. As far as dams go i can't say that i am against them because you are esntially making a peice of a river a lake and while it does destroy a bunch of (river) habitat it creates a bunch of (lake) habitat. what it really all boils down to is that people are lazy to lazy to change feul types. i mean if we really wanted to we could throw up a bunch of solar pannels in the shara and turn the mediterainian into a giant electrolisys facility. but it is fundamentally to easy for us to just keep on doing what we are doing and say to hell with nature at least untill we run out.

p.s. can/do we curse around here? i wanted to throw somethin else in-front of nature but i figured i'd run it by u guys before i did, you get the picture any ways.

p.p.s. balanced e.q. for hydrogen combustion with oxygen

                              2(H2) + O2 = 2(H20)

balanced e.q. for octane combustion with oxygen

                              2(C8H18) + 25(O2) = 16(CO2) + 18(H2O)

i'll get some figures for how many joules/calories each 1 relaeses and repost.
