    Thanks.

mad coin. gots to pull the head and open up the oil pan. yea by that point just replace the bearings and all that other stuff (gaskets). if the piston rings are fucked the bearings have prob seen better days

you really only need to remove the oil pan if your just replacing rings... but if your going to rebuild the engine, obviously your going to have to take the head off, during tear down.

on that note, i suppose it could be possible to have your cylinders bored, even, with the head still one... though i would call you shop and ask first. Otherswise, as stated before, if your going to have you ring replaced, just have the whole engine rebuilt.

The hardest part would be getting the Jesus nut off the front of the crank, just get really good air gun and rip it off while you still have the motor together. Then it's all easy stuff from then on. Get a whole rebuild kit, bottom end gaskets, bearings, seals, piston rings, top end gaskets, seals, etc.

My boy just got his block honed and cleaned, pistons graphite coated, etc for like $150 at a local machine shop. In total, including the cost of the engine, and all the gaskets, seals, rings, bearings, etc, he's got probably $500 wrapped up in it, maybe less.

These things are like freakin' Legos. DIY and save some coin, and learn something while you're at it!

really? i'm pretty sure i replaced the rings in my gm 3800 a couple years ago. just took the oil pan off, detached the connecting rods lowered the pistons down, to replace the rings... now did it work? yeah... for a little while. would it have been more worth it to just rebuild the engine. fuck yeah. but i was just trying to clarify a situation for the OPs benefit.

Don't mean to step on any toes, but now i feel i need to be extra clear....

...Unless of coarse this engine isn't as accessible, as i have not tried this on my M20, or even taken the oil pan off for that matter.

Edit: i was 16, when i did that procedure to the buick... It sounded like a good idea at the time.

double edit: to be super duper clear. OP just rebuild it.

yea pretty sure it cant be done that way with an m20. there is no room.
