Possible supercharging idea.....FI gurus, opinions please

Heres the idea, it hit me a few days ago... Could you possibly take a 318 ( dont know what motor code, M40, M42, something like that) and supercharge it with the G-lader supercharge unit that came on the g60 VW corrado? What would you have to change to make this work? Is it even possible?

    M42 = no knock sensor.

The corrado SC isnt known for its rock solid reliability from what I learned when researching cars...

I know the corrado is shit for reliability, but i though the g-lader is good for about 80,000 until rebuild time.

you could swap in the e36 4 pot, (m44?) with the knock sensor, but I question if its worth the trouble....

ive seen supercharged M42s, so im not sure, but there must be a way around the knock sensor thing.

Below is a supercharged M42 in a 1991 E30 318i. It puts out 156rwkw (yes, "rear wheel" kw's) and is proof that with the right know-how, time and funding, supercharging an M42 can and "has" been done before:

The specs of the engine above are shown below (just so that you can see how extensive you would need to mod the engine to get power figures like this one puts out):

                - MoTeC M48 ECU
                - Bottom-end = re-build complete with 10.0:1 CR Schnitzer pistons
                - Top-end = a set of Schnitzer cams and a bigger Alpina throttle body
                - CAPA Vortech V5 centrifugal supercharger (at 6 psi)
                - Ex-Toyota Supra air-to-air intercooler (hung in front of the radiator) with both rubber mounts and ceramic-coated piping
                - Bosch Motorsport fuel pump with a set of SuperTourer "monster" injectors
                - A ceramic clutch with standard flywheel and 5-speed gearbox
                - 2½-inch mandrel bent exhaust system with a high-flow cat, resonator and Remus rear box
                - Custom brackets for Vortech blower (custom made by K&A Engineering - specialists in racecar fabrication!)
                - Balanced billet crankshaft pulley

                Hope this helps,

I'd like to know the grand total for that car too.

what does 156rwkw translate to in HP?

~ 210hp i think. its a local car, its fuken quick.

the thing i never understood was:

"10.0:1 CR Schnitzer pistons" with FI...seems weird to me!

Sorry to be off topic, but does anyone know what strut bar that car has? I'm really hoping that it's not custom cause that is the only non-hinged bar I've seen for the M42.

I'm not exactly sure on the type of strut bar... It's the only E30 M42 that I've seen it on and my guess would be that it was custom made (maybe).. As far as the cost for the conversion, sure it would be a heap but I was just presenting proof that with the right everything ($$$, know-how, time, etc...), turbo'ing an M42 can have a nice result with the end power figure!!!

                              Pete,

                              Nice car.

To answer this question it's very simple. Yes you can. Do you want to? No. Might as well take a Ford Thunderbird super charger and put it on a 2002 engine. That can't be done, right....

Your best bet is to do some research as to what you want and how much money you want to spend...

It will be very expensive, at least if you want to do it the right way.

I'm not trying to be a dick, but there is a lot of this 'turbo-ing" crap on this bored and a lot (not saying you) of people believe it's a slap it on deal.

Rather go with a M40 N/A beast... If it was my choice....
Actually a early 318 with a M20 'turbo' engine, if you must have FI.
