do you mean front to rear? It's broke, if that's how it's moving.
I'm guessing you did more than just hit a curb. I don't notice a folded wheel there. What really happened?S52-Powered 1987

well 1 inch is a lot more than none so i think its safe to say your inner CV is trashed. replace halfshaft with junkyard item. you dont want the rest of your car getting jealous of a shiney new part. thats a lot of force to transfer through the trailing arm, it could be bent too. does your wheel sit the same relative to the body as before your parking lot heroics ?Comment

Yeah, you wouldn't want to have that shaft flopping around while pulling it. It'd do all sorts of damage.S52-Powered 1987

Or you can buy them from Napa, rebuilt, for $80 each. Anybody had any experience with those? That sounds pretty cheap. Although there's a local place here (Drivelines NW) that will do them for $115/ea.well 1 inch is a lot more than none so i think its safe to say your inner CV is trashed. replace halfshaft with junkyard item. you dont want the rest of your car getting jealous of a shiney new part. thats a lot of force to transfer through the trailing arm, it could be bent too. does your wheel sit the same relative to the body as before your parking lot heroics ?S52-Powered 1987

a "rebuilt" half shaft is just a used one with new grease and boots. there is no cost effective way to remachine the 3D grooves and then you would need bigger balls too. so if the rebuilt axle you get was good before it was rebuilt it will still be good . if it was not so fresh before, well it will still be junk.Comment

As a axle rebuilder, please fuck off. This is the nonsense that kills my business. You are talking about reboot kits you buy from autozone.a "rebuilt" half shaft is just a used one with new grease and boots. there is no cost effective way to remachine the 3D grooves and then you would need bigger balls too. so if the rebuilt axle you get was good before it was rebuilt it will still be good . if it was not so fresh before, well it will still be junk.
Rebuilt or remanufactured axles are machined to over OE dimensions, and then new cages and ball bearings are used to account for the new inner/outer race diameters. If one or both races is trash it gets recycled. In the process of refreshing both inboard and outboard CV's, the paint is stripped and new applied to prevent rust buildup. New grease, new boots, new bands, good as new axle.
If someone offers you a 'rebuilt' axle for less than $60 laugh at them. If there is paint on the inboard or outboard splines return it and get your money back.
Most of our axles are about $100 installed, with a lifetime warranty. Uncommon parts such as E30's are a bit more if we cannot remanufacture your core.
To the OP, take your car to a shop. Your dad doesn't deserve any more punishment than having you as a son.
