Poll: Leave car in neutral or in gear with handbrake?

    Hey,

I'm just wondering how most people park their manual cars. Do you leave it gear and put the handbrake on, or do you leave it in neutral with the handbrake?

    Thanks

"The Camry is an appliance, not a car. It attracts folks who have the same regard for driving that they have for washing dishes,
i.e. it's a necessary but somewhat unpleasant chore and they want something to make the task a little easier and insulate them from the process."

    In gear + handbrake.

Trust me, I lost a car forgetting to leave the car in gear and having the ebrake cable snap. Now it's habit.

      I have always believed...

Flat ground = Neutral w/ parking brake on.

Hill = 1st gear w/ parking brake on.

Where's the option without a handbrake?

I never use mine except if I have to leave the car running and I'm not in it. Emergency brakes stick and seize.

I'm starting to like the idea of Gear + NO handbrake on flat surfaces. It seems easier than having to use the handbrake all of the time. I usually have done Neutral + handbrake on flat surfaces because it's nice to be able to just get in and turn the car on without having to shift it out of gear and then back into gear.

Parking brake and 2nd cause it makes me feel like a badass. The way I see it why not? it's 2 precautionary measures to make sure the car remains stationary.

Man, too bad you can't edit a poll and add another option.

I believe it was the Bentley Manual that said not to park with the car in gear.

So, I've always just used the hand brake unless I'm on a hill and I pop it in first. But, that's me.

People that never use their handbrakes always seem to have issues with them when they do...

In gear, with handbrake, always. Making sure the brake holds the weight of the car, not the transmission. The gear should only be a backup, maintain your handbrake and it will work properly...
