I work on cars so whenever I park a customer's car I always leave it in neutral. I've seen a few customers get in their car and have the car jump forward when they start it up because whomever parked it left it in gear.
So out of habit, I leave mine in neutral too.

        Close.

Parked at the top of a hill but not on an incline, it was at the crest.

            Nowai!

Like I said, I forgot to leave the car in gear.

Which is why I don't make that mistake ever any more, but also why I made it a habit to use both.

Thanks, I wish the guy at this mechanics shop I took mine to tonight would have left it in Neutral. It was dark and I didn't see that he left it in 1st with NO handbrake on, so my car lunged forward a bit when I tried starting it. I see the reasons for leaving it in gear, but when it's a customers car and you don't know what their preference is, you should leave it in Neutral with the handbrake ON!!

I used to, when I started driving.
Then, I realized that my cars were old, and It wouldn't hurt to play it safe.
                Always in gear.

I used to park cars through jr. high/high school, it was policy to never use the handbrake. They would often rust after being washed and seize onto the rotor. Try explaining to a customer that the brake in their freshly repaired car was rusted on, and that the smell of burning clutch is okay when you have to drop from +4000rpm to break it loose. After parking ~10k cars it's become a pretty ingrained habit to always park the car in reverse and never touch the emergency brake unless parking on a hill (which we don't have.)

And I never start a vehicle without one foot firmly on the brake and the other fully disengaging the clutch. It's a simple safety precaution, just like buckling up.

                      Neutral, PARKING BRAKE on.

Plus, I remote start my car, neutral is a necessity.

I did not do this when i had my e30. I reached in and started it, but it was in gear.... So it ran straight into the house!

Nuetch + Brake unless on a hill then R or 1 (and proper wheel turn) as needed

Handbrakes don't stick if they are used on a regular basis and maintained, that's like saying I don't use my clutch because eventually it will need replacement...

My handbrake fell apart inside the rotors, so I took all of it out.

                                In gear.
