HAAAA! I love posts like these. They are what keep the used purchase price of these cars so low, and a great deal for us tinkerers who love a used car bargain :) These cars were built AFTER the Ford acquisition, so quality and reliability greatly increased with the funding from FoMoCo in the early-mid 90's.

I'd recommend anything after 95 in terms of the XJ series. You'll get the luxury of a Rolls Royce, with the durability of a crown Vic! I recommend the XJ6 as they had better reliability, but if you want a reliable hot rod, then go for the XJR!!! I almost purchased one from it's second owner just before I moved here from AB. The only thing that had me uneasy was the auto tranny ( I never trust them, in anything other than an old MB or old RWD Volvo.) I would highly advise AGAINST anything else in the Jag lineup, esp the S type

Check out some of these reviews from owners.

Read 2000 Jaguar XJR reviews from real owners. Find out what they're like to drive, and what problems they have.

    Cliff Notes:

Avoid all Jags like the plague!!!! ;)

Don't you mean the reliability of a ford Taurus? ;)

So youre saying that before the Ford acquisition, the ones with Lucas parts, were reliable?

That's cool and imma let you finish, but we're talking about proper eighties Jags, not Ford crap, so everything you've said is sort of irrelevant to the thread, no?

Oh ok. I didnt read your post carefully enough. I can admit when Im wrong. I was actually referring more to the historic Jags and the 80's models. I should have clarified and specified.

Say no more. Between starting this thread, catching up on all the replies, I did plently of research on not only this model, but the dealership itself. I came to a number of conclusions as to why he should not buy this Jag.

You are all right. The XJ40 is the worst Jaguar in history, especially the 88. I heard that after about 1990, they worked out a number of kinks, but even still they were a pain in the ass to deal with. Road smooth, but had pretty unpredictable steering.

While it's not a horrible car to look at, it doesn't even come close to the previous XJ6 series, or even the following series, starting in '95. This particular model was pretty clean and had lo mileage, but an xj40 is not worth all that trouble.

Furthermore, the pricetag was $9,995. Which after doing some research, I learned was about 3x the average price of that model year, even in mint condition. I learned that this dealership were a bunch of scamming rip off artists who don't sell cars, but put them on consignment.

Still, if anyone's in the downtown San Diego area, I recommend popping your head in. they do have some beautiful cars to look at. And despite them not having a great reputaion as salespeople, they won't bother you if you're just looking around.

Unfortunately, this means he is probably going to have to buy an '05 Camry. You see, his car is about to die (96 Lexus GS, 300k miles). He knows he has to buy a car right away. He's got a friend with an '05 Camry w/ 50k miles he would sell to him for $9. The lady and I spotted this Jag and mentioned it to him, and he wanted to see it and test drive it before signing his life away on the Camry. Guess it's Camry time.

                      $9 or $9k?

I hate Camry's, but hell, I'd drive it over that particular Jag.

$10k for an 88?! My father in-law bought a 98 XJ6 with like 100k on the clock.. it was pretty mint, no problems whatsoever for about 7k shipped from Dallas to Florida off of ebay. I'm sure you can find a much better deal.

Regarding the quality of the car.. it needed shocks and now it needs a new PS pump. Other than that, oil change and go. Great driving car.

EDIT: Oh, and about 135k on the odo. No problems so far.

                          Exactly what I was thinking.

Jags of most eras are great to look at but they require far too much monies to keep them running.

Modern Jags that are less than 10 years old can be had for $8k in prefect condition. They have the Ford reliability and the Jaguar style. Otherwise, pre-Ford Jags are to be avoided at any cost. They have so many design flaws. A friend of mine used to be the manager of a Jag dealership... How about structural box sections filled with water, and in which the main electrical loop would float... No wonder many Jags caught fire, when they actually started.
Brake harder. Go faster. No shit.

This is the model my boss had:

I think his was an `04, but I'm not sure. I've seen these with a bit more mileage in the $12-13k range. The car was stone-cold reliable, and was a friggin' BLAST to drive!
