    Steel oil pan?

Anyone try to make a steel oil pan yet?

Shouldn't be too hard to make, and wouldn't crack like the aluminum ones do. You wouldn't have the cooling fins in the pan, but that's why we have oil coolers, right?

    Thoughts?

My thoughts are it would retain heat and if you did smack it and the pan was the strong part, imagine what would fail.... ripping the entire pan off the bottom of the block? The BMW engineers are more capable of designing this than someone in their garage with some scrap... Pony up the $180 for a scrape pan

I have an m20 steel oil pan sitting in my garage. But I doubt it'd fit in your silly e30.

Yeah, mine is the silly 4-cyl. But the drift car has an m20 that would love one... :nice:

There is a steel m20 pan, from an e28 I believe. Dont know why you would want one. Dont drive like a douche, and if you are low on the street, get a plate. Problem solved. If you are using a steel pan in place of a plate for rub and scrub, all that force will then be transfered to your motor mounts any time the pan sees contact.

it could easily be done. Stainless oil pan with some added fins for cooling would be sweet

I has one :) not on an m20 though. Honestly, just space the motor as high as you can and it won't be that bad.

As sweet as it would look, and not rust, stainless doesn't transfer heat. Like at all. Aluminum is the best at it.
