It's a good way to learn, but make sure you have a garage to work in and tools to work with.

what other mechanical experience do you have? thats what i would be asking my self.
if you feel you can do it, and you except the fact that you could fuck something up, then you should try it.

Maybe you can do other things to bargain for an M20?

You are basically in the same situation I am in. I have already taken the whole engine apart with just the manual, internet, and a friend for extra hands. Its fun just make sure you have music playing it helped me out a lot. Good luck!

M20 is very simple. The only thing to really be concerned about is the bore/honing and rings. and using quality fasteners (stock is more than fine).

Call me crazy, but if you're gonna rebuild a motor, why not get a smoking deal on one with issues. Also, while its apart why not balance the rotating assembly, polish the crank, p&p the head, match the intake & exhaust ports to their manifolds, upgrade the cam, etc, etc. You'll end up with a stronger, longer lasting, smoother revving motor. You've got it all pulled apart anyway, it's not essential to get it done in any time frame, you're "saving" money doing the rebuild yourself which you can then spend at a quality machine shop, and you end up with something a bit cooler than a stock, rebuild m20.
